Stability control light on and loses power

Postby Albatroz » Mon Jul 27, 2020 11:21 am

Hi there,
My MK8 Transit 2015 non ad blue.. start showing the stability control light and engine loses power.
Turn car off and on goes away for a Little wile and back again.
Happens more often when loaded and driving uphill.. very annoying when going on highway and overtaking a car..

Unfortunately no.. I’ve tried to switch off the Traction control but warning would take over still and make engine to loss power..
I will be taking her to the garage soon :?

Have you tried checking of any stored codes or faults?

Tried the hill assistance off.. same thing.. drives for a bit then warning light pops in and engine lose power.
Don’t think it will be Turbo failure.
Seems to be that Stability control sensor it’s gone and cuts power as safety measure.
Hopefully I can get her to the garage early next week to find out.

Hi there,
Did you manage to resolve this issue in the end?
I'm have the same problem, so any light shed on the matter would be most welcome.
Thanks

The ESP/ESC light (car with wiggly tyre tracks) indicates that ESP/ESC is deactivated, but doesn't necessarily mean that there is a fault with ESP/ESC, the fault could be almost anywhere, but the reaction is to deactivate ESP/ESC.

For reference, I've had the same light pop up both for dodgy EGR valve and dodgy turbo.

And to the original poster's symptoms, does sound a lot like sticky turbo vanes/dodgy turbo actuator. Again, I had the exact same symptoms - fault always and only occurred uphill accelerating on motorway with engine hot. Turned out to be sticky turbo vanes.

You could try removing and cleaning turbo, but if you can afford £200-£300 its probably quicker and easier just to swap turbo, preferably for a new Garrett turbo which pop up occassionally on ebay, or for a refurb which are always available on ebay.

(Edit: @Tangerinedream, bear in mind, the above comments only really apply to euro 5 2.2, looks like you may have a euro 4 2.4 which may be different)

What fault codes are you getting.

For reference, my turbo problem was same conditions as yours, only ever on the motorway when engine hot. But I was getting the 'engine malfunction' warning on the screen, accompanied by the annoying beeping jingle. And I was getting turbo actuator related fault codes.

I had a go at changing the actuator and cleaning the turbo (cleaning using oven cleaner without fully disassembling turbo). But neither of these worked for me. When actuating the VNT lever by hand with the actuator removed, I found my VNT vanes were perfectly free over 99% of the range of motion. But at one max extent it was just ever so slightly sticky, barely perceptible. I guess this extent corresponded to VNT position for full throttle-full load, because that's when the fault occurred.

In the end I replaced the turbo as a whole with a genuine new Garrett turbo off ebay, which solved the problem. So that slight stickiness must have been the problem.

I haven’t got the codes anymore but my van kept going into limp mode and the coeds that the RAC came up with was under and over boost and when it went Ito limp mode it also cut out the throttle completely which was not very good as you could not drive to safe place the van had only done 27000 miles and had a slight noise which the RAC man said wasn’t bad but he wouldn’t expect that on such a low mileage vehicle this problem I really blame this on the stop start system fitted for environmental reasons when I first started repairing and driving turbo vehicles the first thing you didn’t do was used high reeves on first startup and not switch the engine off until the turbo had spun down end result was a new turbo I have kept the oil unit so if I have the problem again I will have it reconditioned. The emission control systems they are fitting on modern engines are not really helping some of the parts of the engine with stop start cutting the oil feed off when coming to a halt and EGRs filling up the inlet track and VTN turbo up with crap not mention DPS clogging up as well.

Not sure of your fault but there's a whole lot of contradictions going on here

The end of the Mk5 was 1999-2000
The euro 4 ended in 2012
