Brake level low / service brakes now warning

Postby roperman » Fri Aug 21, 2020 12:03 pm

Hi,

got a mk8 2014 minibus that is warning brake level low / service brakes now every time I turn the ignition on

I've checked the level plug for voltage (it read 12v across the pins), and tried bridging it to no avail.

Anything else that may be causing this?

I would plug it into ids but my lead isn't working.

Thanks,
Danny

Have you checked the brake pads or wiring to them .

Is the fluid level ok ?
Has it been low or empty at all ?

Brake fluid isn't/hasn't been low in my ownership.

Its definitely the fluid low warning as well, and not the pad low warning.

It only seems to have started since its been stood and the battery has gone flat.

I plugged it in to my delphi scanner and managed to clear one of the faults off, it was related to low voltage in abs unit.

If anyone knows where i can get a v95 or v96 download for IDS let me know as I'd like to try IDS on it.

I've had my multimeter on the wires to the resevoir sensor, one seems to be permanantly grounded, and the other seems to pull to ground when the ignition comes on. Not sure if this is normal but i'm going to investigate the wiring/connectors later.

Do you have twin or single batteries and have you fully charged them since being flat ?

I had a custom (single battery) doing similar, owner had not reported flat battery or starting problems, and being AGM battery it always fired up,but would have brake message every time the battery voltage was in a low state.

I’d suggest Investigating batteries/state of charge before going too in depth...
New battery fixed the above fault.

Twin batteries. Front one was a bit low but I've swapped them over and it's still doing it.

Voltage at the fluid level sensor is a little lower than battery voltage, does anyone have a wiring diagram as could do with checking whether it wires to the instrument cluster or somewhere else. Bit of a weird one as it only seems to have developed since its been stood.

It is also now randomly telling me the step is deployed when it's not, and cutting out if I don't disable the step. Starting to suspect either the bcm or a comms error but without ids I'm a bit blind. It's also started to chuck adblue on the floor, think I'm ready to torch the thing, it's booked in for an mot tomorrow!
