2.0 EcoBlue common noise at idle?

Postby Gaz-M » Sun Oct 25, 2020 1:38 pm

Hi, Ive just bought a 2016 Transit 350 2.0 EcoBlue (Panther engine) 170hp RWD with 68k and a full service history. Its bang on except an annoying noise/ slight rattle at idle that gets worse when warm and also since I serviced it (with proper spec oil).

I came across a thread in the Custom section that had a lot of people suffering it even from brand new and some going back to dealers to have rectified, but as usual never anyone returning with the cure. There was a mention of 'fuel pump gear', also an 'idler pulley' but nothing explained or confirmed...

Aux belts have been removed and engine ran, noise is still there so it's something internal.

I'm determined to fix it so it would be good if anyone else has came across it to try and help track it down.

Ive discovered its meant to be an issue with the 'idler' pulley on the timing gear. The bottom pulley the timing belt runs on has a spring in it that supposedly causes the issue and was a recall by Ford up until November 2016. Mine is a December 2016 so hoping it has the affected pulley.

I have the superseded pulley and a whole load of other parts from Ford at great expense, hopefully be done over the weekend so fingers crossed it fixes the noise.

Ive also had to buy the Laser timing tool at £160 if anyone wants to buy it after its done this one job....! :)

Good work gaz
You thinking the "sprung pulley" keeps the gears tensioned and so reduces noise?
Good luck with the job, keep us posted!

Well its done and seems to have cured the problem!

Big thanks to Taz666 who gave me the info on this as its actually a recall on some earlier Transits (upto Nov 2016 I believe).

For future reference its the bottom timing belt pulley (called an idler as its not actually the crank pulley).

The latest part number is 2269608 for the part.

Here is a list of parts required off the recall to repair the problem:

Front cover kit 2005433
Idler Gear 2269608
Crankshaft bolt 2011524
Idler gear bolt 2019999
Fuel pump gear - bolt 2020003
Primer - Front cover 1791368
Sealer - Front cover 1778303
A/C Stretchy belt RWD 2019705
A/C Stretchy belt FWD 2018353

I also put a timing belt kit on it since it was off anyway.

You will need timing tools, which I had to buy so if anyone needs the kit I have one to sell...!

hi , I have a Ford transit mk8 170ch 2017 rwd , i have the taping noise coming from the belt cover only at low rev 800rpm to 1300rpm , there is a risk of not changing the part ? have you found a defect on the old part?

Im not sure if theres a risk but I think probably not, it appears that its an issue with the part from new, the spring on the sort of mesh gear it has on the rear of the pulley. Theres nothing obvious to see with it but it has cured my noise.

i have this same issue and i have been quoted just over £900 to repair it!, could anyone tell me how i find out about the recall please? as mine may well be within this recall as it was manufactured sept 2016? but i wouldnt know how to find out or what to ask about with the ford dealer, with other vehicles that have a recall i have mentioned it to vw previously and they have said there isnt one, or they didnt know about it, only to then as spacifically and they then looked into it and yes it was actually on recall! i need to know what to ask for! :) thanks for any help, the idea of saving over £900 is very appealing right now, also if left would there be a risk of damage? thabnks for any advice or help on the matter

Sorry it was Taz on here that made me aware of recall but didnt say recall reference number as my van wasnt showing it. He just gave me the list of parts required.

Not cheap so push for warranty.

repair in progress, it is quite expensive in parts, because only available at ford , during the dismantling of the damper pulley it broke !!! because blocked, 115euros.
between the new version of the pouly there is a small design difference, on the ring which serves as a spring .
I hope it comes from this because I am already at 500euros just in parts, and the timing belt was in very good condition .

Change the timing belt too, they are known to snap so crazy not to replace while its off.
