Intermittent smoking.

Postby Jaser » Fri Jan 15, 2021 4:40 pm

New to the mk8 transit. So not too clued up. Just bought a 2.2 155hp
Drove it about now for a few months. And noticed sometimes a bit of white smoke out of rear. Some times looks like steam. Sometimes a bit worse. Thought it might of been van regening but not sure if it has a dpf.
The other day noticed oil spitting out of filler cap. Noticed the valve inside had stuck open. So changed that and cleaned up engine. Now that’s fine and no oil on engine. But still every now and then I get smoke at the rear. Can be bad enough to see when you driving. Sometimes last 10 seconds. Sometimes 30 seconds. Then it perfect. When it does happen there’s no problem with engine. Still power. No missing or anything. Drives fine. Starts and idles fine. Thanks.

Hi. Yes. Does have a funny smell. It’s a bit like old burnt oil. But not oil lol. The last few days with it being cold. I’ve been sitting in the van for a few minutes idling doing my diary etc. This seems to cause the problem. I go 30 seconds down the road and it starts smoking. Also if your in wrong gear but can’t be arsed to change down then it starts doing it. About 30 seconds later it’s gone and I can thrash it to red line and it doesn’t puff a bit of smoke. Been keeping a eye on water and oil etc and no problems. Really doing my head in now. It’s horrible when cars behind. Looks like the engine gone yet it driving fine. No problems when plugged in and can’t get it to do it when any one looks at it. Yet it seems to be once or twice a day now.

It won't show any regeneration on dash board. But usually happens when I join motorway on cold engine.

You should have dpf regeneration and it cause smoke.

In a Diesel engine with a Diesel particulate filter (DPF) system, high-sulfur fuel causes white smoke containing odorous and harmful pollutants during DPF regeneration.

I’ve now had the van a few weeks and been trying to work out what makes it smoke. I’ve had no other problems. I’ve know found out it only smokes if it’s left ticking over. If I’m doing paperwork in van. Leave ticking over 5 to 10 mins. Then doesn’t smoke on pull off usually 30 to 60 seconds later. Sometimes it has done it at big traffic lights if stood there for a few minutes. Really baffled now. I can Rev it at full revs for minutes and no smoke. Thrash it and no smoke.

i would suggest driving it on a dualer or something until the smoke stops then try and keep tabs on the mileage until the next time it happens. I get a very similar smoking issue at about 300miles. give or take.

If im on the dualer, or an A road its not really a issue but if i get it while im in town. it can be abit embarrassing to say the least.

Have had exactly the same problem with my 2016 2.2.
I removed turbo pipe and found oil in out boost pipe put hand under boost out on turbo at idle bits of oil in hand,
Replace turbo, striped turbo found carbon on exhaust turbine.
OK cool problem solved!!. No.!!!
Smoke calmed down a lot but after 300 miles still occasionally a puff of smoke then clear, removed oil breather pipe from induction pipe blanked it fitted oil catch tank and like magic no smoke..
Next to replace injector seals and rocker box to sort the crankcase pressure and oil separator..
