Minibus Windows and Sunroof (emergency exit)

Postby C&G » Sat Jan 23, 2021 1:58 pm

As part of my camper build I’d like to swap out some of the opening windows worth fixed windows then insulate up against some of them. Does anybody know if you can swap the stock minibus windows and put in the binder aftermarket ones instead?

Has anybody tried to replace the roof emergency exit glass with an opening camper style window? Or can tell me the size of the opening?

Thank you

Maybe try one of the plant glazing companies they cut them to size I left the opening windows in and insulated and boarded them all over except the one in the sliding door and the one opposite if the rear ones start leaking or smashed I’d look into replacing them with laminated. For the roof window I couldn’t find a opening one to fit so that was insulated and boarded over as well

Thanks Dumper.
Was the issue with the roof opening that it was too big for what you could find? Do you know what the size of the cut out
Is?

Thanks

I couldn’t find one big enough everything I looked at was obviously to small so never got round to taking any measurements I ran out of time to find one if I found one now it would be too much work to fit one but would be nice.

If your going to board over the new window why not just fit a blank steel pannel and insulate that ? it'll be cheaper and if the window ever got smashed you'd have to stip all the int behind it to put in a new on :( if you like the look of windows just paint the pannel black of vynal it in mirror finnish or sumink ?

I’m looking at a Dometic Henki, they are pretty big.

I’ve got measurements for the glass from the inside and the frame inside.

Could anybody be so kind and measure the roof glass from the outside for me please?

Hi All,

I'm in the process of converting an MK8 L2H2 minibus into a utility camper/work van. my workaround for the rear skylight was to order a 800x500mm x 65mm deep fitting from below link: arrived within a week and still to fit. Seems similar quality to the European brand.

Cheers

I'm looking to the same thing with my new build, so the link is useful. How did you get on fitting the skylight?

Hi
If they are any thing like Helki lights that are straightforward to install.

I wonder if there is a way to utilise the existing glass in a opening format?

Cheers James

Hi
How did you get on with this one? I noticed that the cut hole size is 800 x 500, I measured my roof window, metal to metal at 800x 540mm
cheers

The curve on the roof is officially too much for the Heki but you can make it work with strips at each side to wedge it up.

Works well and no leaks after 3 months!

What about that 800mm x 540mm cut measurement?
And what did it end up costing you?

Thought I would resurrect this thread as I also want to put a vent in my minibus emergency glass exit "hole".

Has anyone replaced the glass with a steel panel and then fitted a stand sized vent in the panel ?

It's not something I've done (panel van), but it should be easy enough. I'd probably use thicker aluminium to avoid rust, and then pop rivet and Sika bond it to the van metal. If you're getting rid of your glass window, try and cut the bonding carefully, and you should be able to sell it for £100+ on ebay, which should at least pay for your fan. I've been looking for one for a while, and they rarely come up.
