Of course Ford are. Wouldn’t be a recall if you had to pay mate.

They inspect it. If it’s damaged they’ll replace, if it looks ok they leave it.

This is mine, 72,000 miles and going away for three weeks around Scotland from north Wales in 3 weeks. Does t look like bits missing, but looks cracked.
Any opinions, dont fancy this snapping whilst I’m away.

I think at the start of this thread or one of the pages there’s a picture of the Ford recall bulletin and it shows the belt in different conditions. Looks a bit ropey to me but I’m no expert

Yeah, it’s on page 3. Mine is not as bad as that, or as bad as the images on later pages showing the recall. I did plan on doing it at 80,000. I think I will have a word with the local dealer tomorrow. It’s booked in Friday to have the rear speakers turned on so they may be able to do it then.

Did you get any more pics? On my van I found looking at the writing on the timing belt a bit easier to decide if the belt was de-laminating or not.

Nope, got pics in two places, both show minor cracking but no bits missing. Spoke to Ford just, and they say no recall on my van. It’s a 66 plate registered in 2017 so I would assume it was built in the dates given of between March 2016 and 2019

Van has been in to have rear speakers activated (dealer says it can’t be done). I queried the recall again, they said it had come on this week. Belt was checked and needs replacing. Will be going in on the 22nd of this month to be done. Can’t ask for more than that for the belt.

Now to make the speakers work somehow.

I have a 66 plate 170PS which is currently sitting in a Ford Dealership.

I read there was issues with the timing belts a few weeks ago and with mine at 69k miles I decided to not wait for the belt to break and have the belt replaced at my own cost. This was done by a local independent Transit specialist. Was a big job and cost me around £1000 with a full engine service at the same time. But happy to know the van is good now. I have always had the oil and filters changed every 6-8k miles as well.

Two weeks later and 1500 miles since the service/belt the van made a rumble noise and stopped. Nothing spectacular at all, but I knew it was engine related. So it went back to the garage on recovery. They checked the recalls as they had done before changing the belt and there was now one on the van. It had been issued since the belt change and to date I still have not received a letter from Ford's.

So the dealership agreed to take it in and inspect it as part of the recall (at my cost if it is found to be to do with the belt being changed). What they look for on the recall is parts of the belt, etc that would contaminate the oil and cause engine issues. I have been told they take the sump off and inspect the filters in the base of this for debris. Which kind of makes sense, look how much comes off a timing belt on a normal engine. Why Ford's put this in oil?

So I get a call today to say there is debris in the sump, but not enough to cause an issues. However there is alot of metal in there. So a bearing or piston must have run dry and broke up. I have pointed out surely there should be no debris in engine oil, any small amount pumped round an engine would cause damage. This van has done 71k miles, always been service way ahead of the Ford schedule. What else do they suggest owners to to prevent damage to their engines.

The case is now being passed to Ford's warranty department. The dealership thinks it won't happen, they say they are happy to do the work. In fact they have 4 others in the workshop at the moment waiting for new engines under warranty. That alone tells me there is a major issue here and Ford's must know they have messed up.

Anyone else had this issue or been successful getting Ford's to replace the engine? My concern is I get a new engine and I now only have 70k miles to worry about it going again.

Just an update on my issues with the timing belt, etc.

Ford's have just said they are putting a new engine in it under warranty and at no cost to me. Will take at least a month to do if parts are available. Longer if they are waiting for the parts. But at least Ford's have put their hands up and admitted it is their issue.

Very relieved :)

My recall came up on ETIS automatically so no instigation on my part, other than to book the van in.

From what your telling us, I'd say you have to have a word with the Transit Specialist rather than arguing with the dealership. My understanding is that when they change the belt they're also doing a full oil change so for there to be anything in the oil (metal or belt) 1700 miles after the belt was changed and after a full engine service seems very odd to me. If the engine damage is not a result of the timing belt failing but instead another part I'd say you're probably going to struggle to get Ford to replace the engine under warranty. I think they acknowledge that there is an issue with the engine relating to timing belt failures (otherwise they wouldn't have issued a recall) and they seem prepared to replace the engine at their cost for these failures which might be why those 4 vans are sitting at your dealership.

In any case it seems to me that the best process for anyone to follow is to wait for a recall on your vehicle to be issued by Ford themselves, take it to them to inspect and if necessary replace, and if they choose not to replace the belt consider paying to have that done. Changing the belt independently or without a recall in place gives Ford the upper hand and reason for them not to replace an engine at their cost. That's my thinking anyway, and how I'm approaching this.
