Power steering failure on new transit

Postby Flatfish » Sat Feb 13, 2021 3:55 pm

So my transit sport has lost its power steering.
Looks like a rack failure at 1000 miles
Has anyone had this problem on new van?
Dash says steering assist malfunction, service required.
Appreciate any replies

I don't know for certain, but I'll be surprised if it's hydraulic power steering. I expect it'll be direct electric motor driven. If so, check fuse firstly.

2019 mk 8.5 MCA models have electric power steering.
Previous models have hydraulic power steering.

It's more or less the only real mechanical change aside from cosmetic stuff.

Hence, Lane Keeping Aid is now available, which steers you back into the lane.
The old hydraulic system could only alert you by vibrating the steering wheel.

Van is being recovered by Ford assist.
Racks are on back order. Quoted weeks to months.
Thanks ford. Why would you want to trust electronics over mechanics!
Shame it can't steer itself back to the dealer for a refund.

It steers you away from accidents, and reverse parks for you too. If you can trust it.
It's a shame Vans development are tech based rather than engineering based.

I'm not really into toy vans, so wouldn't know.
I guess they all have electric steering, like a Tamiya lunchbox?

Power steering rack is still on back order.
So I found a new rack and fit it myself.
Result.
