Mk8 scuttle leak into engine bay

Postby Sam123 » Thu Feb 18, 2021 8:40 pm

Anyone with a Mk8 will presumably have the issue of the scuttle leaking rain water into the engine-bay at both sides. It seems a really poor design, the driver's side leaks onto the airbox and the passengers side leaks onto the ECU and chassis leg etc.

The below shows where it leaks from on both sides:

Image

There are some aftermarket trim pieces that Ford produced to counter this issue. My 2015 van already had the driver's side piece installed when I bought it:

Image

But it didn't have the passenger side piece. So rain pissed and and the ECU was constantly soaking and the chassis leg held water. I knew there was a Ford piece, but just couldn't find a part no. So I made the below to catch the water:

Image

Which worked, but was a bit ugly.

The only reason I made my own was because I couldn't find the proper Ford part. But the other day by chance I happened to find it on the parts diagram. Its hidden away in with the HVAC ducting:

Image

It's part 02408 on the diagram.

RH (driver's side is Ford part no 1927680 - there's a few on ebay for around the £10 mark -https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Ford ... SwV7pfNjtk

LH (passenger's side is Ford part no 1936723 - £14 on ebay -https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Ford ... Swq4tfaeG~

So I bought and fitted it, and got rid of my bodge job. To fit you just remove the original drain pipe and it clips on. And problem solved, much smarter:

Thought this may be of interest to others with MK8s.

Do you mean the ebay links Dumper?

I can't seem to sort the links, but if you just stick the Ford part no's in the ebay search bar they just pop up.

Hmm, strange. I can't seem to edit the links in original post. And even though I'm posting an ebay URL as the link, it seems to convert to a transit forum link. Is the below any better? If not, you should be able to just copy and paste the URL itself into a browser?

Driver's side 1927680 -https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-Transit ... SwPYNfnyq4

Passenger's side 1936723 -https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Ford ... Swq4tfaeG~

It's something to do with the forum anti-virus software, the only way to do it seems to be to copy the ebay item number, and paste it into the ebay search bar.

I must confess to liking your "workaround" water catcher, you could have refined it by running it through a filter, and a pump, to keep the washer bottle topped up :P

No worries Dumper. Do you use ebay? If so, ebay item number [two-seven-four-five-zero-four-three-six-four-two-three-two] is the passenger side one which I bought, £13.99.

Thank you for this info. I had a soaked airfilter few months ago because of this issue. Ford mechanic mentioned he had seem a few transits with stuffed engines because of this problem. Your links and part numbers are really appreciated.

Glad it helped. The production date on the part I bought was marked as 2015. So Ford knew about the issue at least since then. I don't know whether newer versions came with the deflector piece from the factory.

Hi all,

I appear to already have these parts installed from the factory, but they don’t work well at all!

Also water drips into the engine bay directly above the engine and pools on the transmission casing and engine block casing.

Water is getting behind the scuttle itself and drips down 2 metal plates which look like brackets for the windscreen wiper pivot arms (not the outside blade arms).

So I’m thinking of removing the scuttle and re-sealing to ensure no water drip between the windscreen and the scuttle.

Q. Has anyway removed the scuttle and sealed this area? Any tips?

I've found these parts work OK in catching the rain water at the sides of the scuttle. But I know the problem you mean with water dripping from the centre of the scuttle onto the engine. I haven't bothered trying to rectify it yet. because mine doesn't drip too much. But I probably wouldn't use a curing sealant, as you'd then struggle to get the scuttle off again to change the scuttle/windscreen in future, and it could end up trapping water and causing rust. I'd probably take the scuttle off and use something like lots of vaseline to seal between the windscreen and scuttle.
