Buying a spare wheel

Postby mcbutler » Thu Mar 11, 2021 8:39 am

Hi all,

When I bought my transit the spare wheel was missing.
No big deal I thought but I am having real problems getting my hands on one - dont want to buy a new one of course.

Any ideas?

Vam is a 350 panel single rear wheel.....

Thanks in advance :-)

As it's only a spare, and doesn't have to match, would a Mk7 wheel do the job? Loads of those on ebay :)

To be honest I have no idea if Mk7 - Mk8 wheel are the same. Its not just size and style of course, its load/offset etc.

The Mk 7/8 wheels appear the same (number of studs/distance) but the recessess and nuts are diffferent. I would not risk it for this reason. Ebay is great - I've been able to buy a new Mk8 spare for £50. Only done it once though....

Best price so far is £70 for just the steel wheel! Prices around the £95 - £120 are common.
Waiting for the main stealers quote - jokers with pop star prices I bet.....

I got a wheel off eBay almost new for £40 and out a cheap Chinese branded van tyre on for another £50. Sorted. Then where to store it. You either have to buy the cradle if you did not get one or in my case I just out it on the roof rack.

Sorry for what might seem like a dumb question (from a total transit van virgin) but here goes.. When I had a look round my new 460 minibus last week at the dealers (not collected it yet) I noticed that there was a big yellow jack under the passenger seat. The van has double rear wheels, what is the spare wheel like, i completely forgot to look for one.... As the front and rear wheels are totally different? Can the spare be used for any wheel?
Cheers

The front and rear are the same they just fit the opposite way round the inner rear wheel goes on the axle the same way the the front goes on and the the outer goes on the opposite way it’s the only way to fit two wheels at the back.the 460 with it having twin wheel comes with a bottle Jack because of the weight of the van .the spare wheel is at the rear underneath the van a bung in the rear bumper it’s removed to use the wheel brace to lower it .
