What does this pipe do please?

Postby KevofCov » Fri Mar 19, 2021 9:24 pm

Van is a 2.2ltr RWD LWB 3.5t 2016 (non Adblue)
Hi
The pipe detailed in the attached photo is showing gunk and crud underneath – where is meets the filtered air intake shown A. I’m gunna whip it off and clean it out. What does the pipe do? It connects points A and B within a heat shield duct. Point B is high up at the rear of the engine by the bulkhead.
I’m guessing its something to do with emissions. The flow must be from A towards B otherwise crap air is flowing from B to A, this would not be good?.....

It’s for the engine breather, crankcase fumes/oil are separated in the rocker cover and oil returned to cylinder head, then any fumes are sucked into inlet pipe and burnt off through engine.

You may see some ‘gunk’ in the pipe caused by condensation mixed with oil pullover.

Rarely, the pipe splits where it joins to air filter to turbo pipe, usually because the oil has cause it to go soft.

Thanks Frag
So I was wrong - flow is from B to A. Crankcase fumes are fed through into the clean air intake system. No wonder turbos have a tough life....

You could fit an oil catch can, pipe from B to oil catch can then either pipe back to A or vent to air and cap A.

No because that side is under pressure so would pressurise the crankcase rather than draw fumes from engine which is why it's piped to the inlet side of the turbo
