Wing mirrors only close

Postby robjmccarthy » Thu Apr 01, 2021 6:38 pm

Hi All,

Hoping someone can help point me in the right direction.

Out of the blue, the power folding wing mirrors stopped working fully. They will close when the switch is pulled (if I manually open them beforehand) but they won't open.

When I pull the switch, I hear an electric "click" sound as if something is being turn on.

I have searched the forum, found a few discussions about them not working at all, but not this scenario.

Has anyone any ideas??

Cheers
Rob

TO UPDATE

I replaced the wiring loom in the drivers door. This didn't fix this issue (but did fix another issue I had - the left mirror tilt control had stopped working).

The 'click' I hear, I have pin pointed to coming from the Body Control Module fuse 'area'.

I'll keep looking, and searching, but if anyone can help then I'd be mightily grateful.

I'm not saying that this is your problem, but we had this with my son's Focus. We messed about with switches, wiring, and even took apart the drivers door mirror to check the connections inside (what a faff that was  ) The one thing I couldn't get at to test, was the motor itself, and that's what turned out to be the problem (I think it was partially seized up)
I bought a broken secondhand genuine mirror, ( the casing and motor were intact and working) rebuilt it with parts from the existing mirror, and it all worked spot-on, and still is working 2 years later.

I did keep it to investigate the motor further, but more important things always come up

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I will take apart the wing mirrors to check the motors, but could a faulty motor on 1 side cause them to both stop working?

I found 2 posts with what seems like the same problem, but there wasn't a root cause posted:

That was what confused us, is that both mirrors seemed to be affected, but I'm guessing that the BCM detected that one mirror wasn't working so cut the power to both? Who knows with modern vehicle electronics, but in any case, replacing that one mirror stopped the clicking noise, and they both worked.

My theory is that the motor was seized, but as I couldn't get it out without breaking the casing, I couldn't have a good look at it. If you can get the motor out on yours, perhaps you could see if it feels ok when you apply power to it directly

Hey Altransit (or anyone else that knows).

Any tips/ideas/steps on getting to the motor in the wing mirrors? I've had the back off, several small hex screws, but to no avail.

Cheers
