Seat swivels

Postby Winbro77 » Mon Apr 05, 2021 8:38 pm

Evening all,

Converting my mk8 into a camper and looking to fit swivel seats up front(2 single seats upfront)

Has anyone fitted swivels? If so which ones and what are your experiences?

I was going to go for the ones below. But they are listed for mk6 and 7, and state not for mk8 or custom. I'm sure I could make them work regardless.

Thanks
Greg

The swivels I have on my mk8 I originally had them on my mk6 to fit them I had to do a bit of filing on the holes on them and made some heavy duty flat washers out of flat bar on the bolts. Because I didn’t like the slight movement on the swivels when locked in the driving position I removed the catch mechanism and replace it by drilling two holes in the top and bottom parts of the swivels and welding captive nuts on the bottom and now use two bolts with thumb wheels on them one at the front of the seat and one at the back this makes them very solid with no movement at all it was only slight before but it just annoyed me.

That’s a good guide workbox would be worth putting in the how to section.

I have 2 single captain chairs upfront from factory and added the 'Scopema' swivel plates. I'll share my experience..
If the Scopema swivels are 'the best overall' according to Faroutride.com then the others must be absolute dog*%$t. These bases weigh an absolute tonne, they add height to the seat base so if you are very tall then your headroom is compromised and the Scopema are the lowest around AFAIK. They creak and squeak even if you grease every nook and cranny. The procedure to swivel the drivers seat is a joke: Put van in gear, lower handbrake, pump seat all the way to the top height setting, pull seat all the way forward, with door open release swivel latch (which in itself is poorly located), then you can swivel whilst trying not to choke yourself with the seatbelt.
If you have the 2 batteries setup and inverter outlet below the handbrake like I did then good-luck with that! More hurdles if you have heated seats as the cable isn't particularly long.

After doing all the grinding and replacing the handbrake assembly bracket I ended up ditching the swivel because I needed the room behind for the custom bench seat. When you rotate the driver swivel seat it takes up a stupid amount of room on rotation, so I would lose out on nearly a foot of precious campervan build space behind.

Negatives aside the passenger seat is an absolute doddle and easy to use so I can recommend that. The drivers side is a complete joke IMO..
I think there's an option on the Mk9 Transits factory swivels I bet they're a lot better.

So I have a Scopema Driver's Swivel plate if anyone wants it? You would just need to source the handbrake lowering kit.

I didn’t use a handbrake lowering kit just redriled the seatbox and cut the plastic cover to suit even with it lowered I still have to release the handbrake as I had to on the mk6 my kitchen unit is 9 inches from the back of the battery box so the seat is at a angle when in the camping position the only slight difficulty I have when turning the seat is when the van is on the the levaling blocks I have to hold it on the foot brake while someone else swivels the seat and then put the handbrake on not to much of a problem.
