Spare wheel carrier for a 2017 l3h3

Postby Woodguy78 » Thu Jun 03, 2021 10:04 pm

I’ll be upgrading from a mk7 to a 2017 l3h3 next and was wondering if it’s possible to retro fit a spare wheel carrier to this model? Would like to carry a spare wheel if it’s possible I’m not to keen on those foam puncture kits

It can be done, but if you can find a space inside the rear,it would be cheaper & easier, and prevent anyone cutting the cable underneath to steal it....

If you fit the carrier, you need to hope the blanking plate in rear floor hasn’t been covered over by ply lining or the like..
You will need the carrier itself,a safety cable, and the foot that goes through centre of spare wheel, obviously the wheel itself and tyre.
Also, there are usually polystyrene blocks stuck to underside of the van,the wheel winds up against these to keep it square and even.
And after all this,if the van only had an inflator kit from new,you still won’t have a tool to wind the wheel up or down,or a jack or wheel brace....

Yes, I've done this on a mk8.

Ordered the parts from Ford and a wheel from ebay.
Easy to fit.

The new design is less nickable than before.

I usually factory order new vans, but it really annoys me that stock vehicles never have a spare wheel, passanger airbag or alarm, even at decent trim levels.
They have all the bells and whistles, but not basic things that really should be there.

Up until now, I've never had a van with no spare wheel, but I have had to buy one for the car, and it had to be a space saver because the well in the boot won't accept a full sized tyre.

I can't ever remember getting a puncture which could be repaired by foam, and have nearly always destroyed the tyre before managing to stop. The last time I had a puncture in the van, I had to call out Green flag because the van was too low to get the spare off the carrier, so I now have one stashed inside.
I'm not sure what would happen, and how much it would cost, if you had to call out a tyre company to replace a shredded tyre, if you had no spare

Yeah seems crazy not to supply a spare especially on a commercial, will definitely look to fit a spare on the new van
