MK 8 460E Minibus Alternator Rating

Postby grantf » Sun Sep 05, 2021 11:24 pm

Hi, from New Zealand, I'm a first time Transit Van owner and new member of this forum. I have an ex UK 460E Minibus which I intend to convert to a campervan, build year is 2015. I'm wondering what the alternator rating is ? I have searched the forums here and can't find anything on that except for the Etis data for an older model which listed it as "Heavy Duty" I'm thinking it might be over 200 amps or at least I hope so, if anyone knows It would be much appreciated.

Cheers from Auckland (in level 4 lockdown )

I can’t help on what output but my conversion on a 460 minibus the leisure batteries are two 125 amp charged by a Sterling b2 b 70 amp unit and I use it to Marshall on car rallies and run two two way radios and a night heater for upto 8 hours during the rally but at night before the rally I will run a 12v camping tv or a radio in the back all night the night heater will be on if needed when watching the tv and in this time frame a 1600 W inverter to power 500 W microwave for upto 10 minutes .the van engine will be run maybe 30 minutes getting the van into location on the stage.in summer the night heater gets less use but I then use a refrigeration type cool box that will be run daytime.

Like Dumper, I've got a 2015 460 minibus also. I run a 50A B2B with no problems. Being a minibus yours should probably have an auxiliary battery fitted, so I'd guess a high output alternator also.
What do you intend to power with it?

I had a look on my 2015, and could not find anything on the alternator regarding output. Maybe it is there, but I could not see it without removing it.

If you cannot find the data via the VIN number, then probably the easiest way to find out the output is to run a test on the vehicle. You will need an old school battery load tester, and an inductive current clamp meter. Basically you start the engine, connect the load tester across the battery and crank up some load (2-300 amps or so) and clamp the alternator output cable, to see what the output is. Might need to bring the revs up to 1500 or so to get max output.

Or just remove the alternator, take it to an auto sparky and get them to bench test it.

I have the same question for my 460 Minibus, currently converting to a camper van, trawling around the internet it seems a Ford HO alternator could be as high as 225 amps.

Hi, I intend to power 2 x 150 Amp- Hour lead-carbon house batteries , in the longer term I might go to 400 AH. The van has two 75Ah FLA batteries under the drivers seat.

The heavy duty alternator in Mk8 van is 240A, don't know if it's the same in the minibus.

Here's the output curve:
