Front brake pads

Postby man le-mans » Fri Sep 10, 2021 2:07 pm

How easy are the front pads to change on 68 plate 350. I’ve done lots on older cars year’s ago but as said was years ago. I’ve heard that some cars vans need special tool to twist the Brake caliper to get the new pads in.
I seen a few videos on YouTube but they have all been on older mk8 2.2 engine and just wondering if anything has changed on the newer vans.

Ive done the older 2.2 mk8. I recall using the twisty tool, but very easy job. I doubt it will be any different on the 2.0L version. These things are made for high mileage and regular changes. Cheap brake tools are available on ebay etc. Well worth the investment.

no special tools to do the front just a big screwdriver to push piston back before you remove the old pads

the backs need a rewind tool and the left side passenger is left hand thread and the drivers side rear is right had thread

Take the cap off your brake fluid reservoir before you force the pistons back. IOf the fluid has been topped up as the pads have worn it will be ejected from the reservoir, and we all know that brake fluid is also a very effective paint stripper

Thanks everyone for the advice it’s much appreciated and was all straight forward like said.

The only problem I had was the front locking wheel nut was overtightened which ended up stripping the locking wheel nut key. So had to get a new one from Fords and then had to cut that one off, as it stripped the second key. I did undo the others in case that happened again tho. then I also replaced that one and the other locking wheel nuts with normal nuts so that it’s not a problem again.

Because the van is just 3 years old this month and been serviced at Fords I’m guessing the wheels have never been off as the pads are the first thing ever to be replaced.

Also surprised that the brake wear sensor is only on the left side and not both.
