Brake pad service warning

Postby hectors-tranny » Mon Mar 14, 2022 10:04 am

Just got my first brake pad service warning come up.

Anyone have any experience as to how much leeway this warning gives you? Yeah I know I should take it straight in, but I can't help but think it's in Ford's interests to err on the very conservative side with these!

Cheers.

Light comes on with approx 3-3.5mm pad left. A new pad is around 10mm

When mine came on I had barely any material left and had to change them straight away

So is it actually sensing the thickness of the brake pads or is it mileage based? Because mines just given me the same alert and I had pads and discs replaced (supposedly) 2 years ago and can’t have done more than 2000 miles in it since…

When the pads wear down to the sensor in the pad it breaks the circuit and brings on the warning on the dash and does the same if you get a broken wire or bad connection on a plug .

Usually pad wear sensors make, rather than break, the circuit, via the disc and chassis, when excessively worn. Is the Transit different?

Not 100% sure but if you get a bad connection on a plug it puts the light on mine did it after a pad change and it was a bad connection on a plug a month later.

Fantastic, These vans are a never ending source of problems.
Will a code reader tell me which of the sensors is faulty? I presume not, otherwise Ford wouldn’t be able to replace them all and half the van if you took it in to them…

I changed my rear pads this weekend.

Warning came up and front was changed last May so I figured it would be the rear.

The sensor was only on the passenger side, there is no sensor housing or wires for it on the right side.

The pads were still OK but the sensor had been ground down so you do have a good while to go.

I bought oem parts from Ford Parts site, I scrutinised to ensure I got the correct ones and yet the replacement sensor wasn't long enough, and was not the same length as the factory fit one.

I also realised I need new discs so that was a bit disappointing.

So does anyone know if a code reader will be able to identify which of the sensors is faulty? Or will I have to go around them all…

You will have to go round them all.

Right pain in the ar5e

I fitted a new rear axle loom on mine.

The connections had been broken and bodged together £80 ish. Was ok for a few months then on again.

Pads are ok so just ignore it. Revert back to the old system of listening for a grinding noise.
