New Van Leaking Scuttle

Postby dethleffs » Sun May 01, 2022 2:03 pm

Today I’ve opened the bonnet on my new 22 reg transit Camper to find the engine very wet and the soundproofing mouldy on the wheel arches. The bulkhead rain gutter under the windscreen is leaking where the passenger wiper spindle is and dripping on to the air filter housing also the area where it is supposed to drain into at the ends was blocked by two big (sopping wet) sponges in bags !

I recall I had a similar situation on my MK7 in 2009. What are Ford playing at?

Same problem with our 2018 Rollerteam. There is capillary transfer going on to where it’s falling onto the airbox. Seal with Screwfix gutter seal where it should drop down to the press on channel that goes over the inner wing. On the near side I put a cut down 2L coke bottle over the large multi connector by the ECU. Make sure the drain holes never block up.
The hard plastic clip that the scuttle clips into is part of the windscreen and can’t be bought.
I waxoiled everything around it to death.
Make sure the water hasn’t got to the injectors as replacement is a common problem on motorhomes. They fail anyway you just don’t want the added frustration of them rusted in place.

I’ve booked it to go into the Ford Transit centre to get it looked into.
I did think of a fix to stop it draining into the inner wings on both sides. If I pull off the plastic gutters on the ends of the scuttle, it reveals a round stub that a length of hose would fit on to drop the water down to the ground.

I’ve taken a couple of pictures before it goes in to dealer.

May be of use, the bonnet hinge is a known issue on the MK8

It’s been to Stoneacre Ford in York today. They have replaced all the matting under the bonnet and the scuttle assembly. Tested it at home with some water, still leaks like a sieve.
I’ll have a go myself with some butyl rubber sealant on the wiper grommet and extend the passenger side gutter into the inner wing area. Not impressed.

Hi,
I also have a 2022 Chausson version Transit, with leaking windscreen/scuttle. I have fixed up the sides, to improve drainage, but the centre area drips onto the air filter case.
As it is under warranty I have visited 3 different transit service centres, and harassed my original supplier. I have also contacted Ford Fleet service centre at Laindon who advised me that it is designed to be a wet area in the engine compartment.
As far as I am concerned the vehicle is not fit for purpose in this state, because unfixed water ingress will damage the electronics, injectors, and possibly ingest water in through the air intake.
I am wondering how anyone else has managed to get satisfaction from Ford with this issue.
Cheers

by the age of 8 their almost dead due to water ingres as im now finding out. ford dont give a damn. if you have a rwd also watch out for drainage right over turbo which seizes the actuator as i also found out.

If its leaking from either end of the scuttle and water running down onto the air box one side and ecu the other, theres is a fix from Fords. Its a deflector that directs the water away, they are different for each side these I believe are the part numbers
Drivers side 1927680
passenger 1936723

Theres an older post about it viewtopic.php?f=64&t=205472&p=1721516&hilit=leaking+scuttle#p1721516
Mine was pissing water over the ecu, its maddness that Fords actually sold the vans with this issue!

My van is a 2022 and have those "funnel" parts and there is also water over the air filter box and mould in the insulation foam in the wheel wells...

Not sure those parts cure the problem.

I used some butyl tape on mine and it made a huge difference. Having already had 4 seized injectors and a cracked cam carrier I am very keen to keep the water of the airbox and engine. The butyl tape has redirected the water to the outlets and the funnels so its now just a case of keeping all the clear.

Do you have pictures or can paint in some where did you used the butyl?
