Massive fuel consumption??? 2016

Postby Johnler » Wed Jun 15, 2022 7:56 pm

Hi guys hoping somebody can help, I’ve only been doing short journeys in my transit for the lockdown , now last Sunday I needed to do a 350 round trip, filled van up as high as I could get it, shown 509 miles on computer, I don’t normally look at this, but for the first time in 3 years owning it, it’s empty, I noticed to the miles left in the tank, I was loosing a mile very quickly, like I say I don’t normally look at this, it normally shows ok, then will drop, if turning it off back on, we’ll this time I did 35 miles about and had used 135 miles of fuel, pulled over a few time, check for leaks, nothing, I don’t drive silly, never over u0, mostly 60-65 mph, can anyone give me an idea, van FSH, every 6000Miles serviced, any help would be a big help, thanks

Computer says no, bloody things!, best way to get accurate fuel consumption is to brim the tank full, note the mileage and then drive it, brim it again and note the mileage, drive it and then brim and note again, after several tank fulls and mileages you will have an idea of the general consumption and you can add them all together and calculate an average.

I never look at miles to empty it’s never accurate as chug says the only way to be sure is work it out manually even the mpg reading is usually a mile or to out did the fuel gauge actually drop rapidly mine does about 100 miles to a 1/4 of a tank on the gauge

Miles to empty is a calculation/estimation based on the mpg of your previous tank of fuel, it's only a guide at best, and unless you're doing exactly the same journeys, same speed and load, same driving style, it will never be accurate. It will recalculate as you use the fuel, so at least you'll never conk out with it showing 100 miles left in the tank!
Mine has 'projected' anything between high 400's up to low 600's depending on my previous journeys before filling up, but I keep a separate and much more accurate record of my mpg, so I don't take too much notice of it. I can tell you, from experience, that driving at 70mph causes a massive increase in consumption, compared to driving at 60mph, but if needs must, and you have a lot of miles to cover in a day you have to sacrifice your fuel in exchange for time saved :)

I no they aren’t accurate, thought I had said I never go by thing normally, I did brim it, and filled it again to try see how it was working out, I did around 73 miles in total, van was showing just over half tank left, drove 11 miles to fill it again, that took me to half tank in total on the mark, cost £73 to fill it back to top, over covered 84 miles and cost £73 ,ove no engine lights come on, I normally get 100 miles before the gauge shows in between full and 3/4 ,

For comparison it's probably most useful to calculate your mpg rather than miles per half tank or cost per 'x' miles. For reference, in my RWD 2.2 high top jumbo I get about 33-35 mpg on the motorway doing 60ish mph.

And regarding the fuel gauge, I've had a couple of Transits now and the fuel gauges have all been very slow to drop from full to half-tank, but then drop from half-tank to empty much more quickly.

Ok so working out at say £10 a gallon, I got 84 miles to half a tank, cosy me to him it again an not a fu;; as last time, but full as last tim as I filled it until it started spitting it on the floor, basically it didn’t turn the pump off when full, this time I filled it u til I go first stop, on pump, normally you can put it on full let it stop you then keep going a couple of times, till it’s full,, but working out at 7.3 gallon used , 84 miles in total covered, 11.5 miles per gallon, empty van so very light, fwd van, I have had transit vans for over 30 years, and his for just over 3 years, price of fuel, isn’t he issue, as I’m fully aware fuel prices are sky high, mine normally takes a fair while o start to move off dull them shoots down after half or so, never had it until of late use fuel like this, I work my mpg normally at around 18-20 mpg, but 11 seems to much, my van has never been empty since buying it, and I carry a lot of weight in it normally, tools materials, that’s why I put mpg so low, now empty I hoped for more, and on motorway miles better still, as I’m normally doing short runs,

11.5 mpg does sound problematically low. At a rough guess, I'd have thought I average 25+ mpg even around town. Perhaps get each of the wheels up off the ground and check you haven't got brakes dragging.

There's a breather tube, attached to the tank, which is prone to splitting, and leaking fuel when the tank is full. Maybe yours has been doing this

Or else, try giving your neighbour your best Paddington stare. He might be nicking your diesel in the night.

Have you tried a diagnostics tool such as forescan?

What about injectors? I will use these every now and again :https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/283935639086 ... Swal5YGJOV

Didn’t no bout this, have been under can’t see any leaks, but obviously can’t when driving, but dry when just stopped and at a stand still, tbh can’t seem to find a tube or any place they should be one, unless you mean when it overflows if over filling

Tried no codes stored, so don’t no where to go from here, I was hopping on a code or two

Not tried the cleaner, might be worth a try, never thought about this

Might be worth a shot wont do any harm, when was the fuel filter last changed? Fill a fuel filter neat with the injector cleaner and run it through like that any extra chuck in the tank.

Boost leak?
