Full beam stopped working - not the bulbs

Postby Digahole78 » Wed Nov 23, 2022 12:38 am

Hi all. My full beam stopped working the other night on both sides at the same time. New bulbs hasn't fixed it. Next I'll need to check the relays but manual seems yo suggest there are 2 relays, one for each side. Seems strange they would both blow at sane time. Anyone have experience with this at all. I still get the blue lamp on the dash if that helps diagnose.

Many thanks

I don't own a MK7 so don't know for sure, but could it be a fuse?

I seem to remember that some cars I have had in the past have had a separate fuse for headlights and main beams?

It's always worth checking first, of course, but the Mk7 has separate fuses for dipped and main beam, and also for each side: F39 & F41 for Dipped beam, and F51 & F53 for main beams, passenger fuse box.

Hi,

The 2014 models appear to have a single relay for the main beams, but unfortunately this is built into the BCM and not replaceable. Initially the diagrams made me think they were separate as you said (the ones further down), but then I found this diagram.

There are separate fuses for for the main beams, F9/F10 in the BCM, but again as you said, for both of them to go at the same time? See the diagrams below for left & right hand clusters.

That you're getting the blue indicator light would I think suggest that the relevant signals are reaching the BCM, as the steering angle sensor module (that the control stalks go through), and the instrument cluster don't appear to be connected on the same can bus networks.

The 12V feed that provides power to the relay provides power to a whole load of other things, so you can rule this out if other items such as (listing from diagrams) windscreen washers, powerfold mirrors, front fogs, and in fact the rest of headlight stuff (which you've said are working) are working.

As the diagrams show, the individual lights in the cluster all share the same ground, so I suspect that can be ruled out. Similarly I would likely rule out the individual wires or as it's both main beams, anything in the clusters.

Unless I'm missing something obvious (very possible), that does rather leave the relay and the microcontroller activating the relay coil in my mind, but these aren't really serviceable parts. Not sure I can offer much by way of advice at this point, but hope the diagrams are of some help.

Regards

Noel

Thank you Noel. Amazingly detailed response. Definitely a lot to digest there but I'll try my best to get my head around it all.

To confirm it is a mk8. One of the early ones.

Thanks all for help so far. Will report back when I know more
