Ford Transit 2.2 RWD no crank, no codese

Postby roperman » Wed Feb 01, 2023 8:20 pm

Hi,

Got a 2015 Ford Transit 2.2 RWD that won't crank on key. Scanner says ecu detecting ignition key in crank position, but isn't firing the starter relay.

No fault codes stored.

Very occasionally, it will crank for about half a second and then stop, and has actually started and fired up for a second or 2 before cutting out.

Recovery did tow start it but it cuts out straight away.

Any advice on what to start testing and how?

Kind regards,
Danny

The first thing you could try, is to replace the ignition switch. They are a frequent failure point, are (relatively) cheap, and easy to fit
1994 Mk4 SWB 115 Minibus 70ps Di (R.I.P.)
1997 Mk5 SWB 115 Minibus 70ps Di (Gone, but not forgotten!)
2004 Mk6 SWB T280 Medium Roof 85PS 2.0 TDDi - Vantunered (Also gone)
2008 Mk7 SWB T280 Medium Roof 85PS 2.2 TDCi - Also Vantunered

Hadn't realised they'd used the same crap switch as the mk6 & 7. Fairly sure I've got a spare somewhere so I'll try that and report back

I've swapped the switch and still no joy.

I've noticed that it will crank and sometimes fire if I reconnect the battery with the ignition turned to start and the clutch pedal down (ie when its first powering up), but generally cuts itself out within half a second.

Seems odd that there are no codes stored, as it seems to be unhappy with something. Bit worried its the ECU or something. How easy is it to swap an ecu for testing (I do have similar vehicles to borrow parts from), is it just ECU and BCM that would need swapping?

Thanks,
Danny

Did you ever fix this fault mate? I have one doing exactly the same today, won’t crank when warm, but as soon as it cools it starts fine.

Turns out someone had tried to map the adblue out but only disabled all the error messages on the instrument cluster. So it was waiting for the adblue tank to be filled and doing the no start thing until it detected adblue in the tank.

We'd only just bought the van so had no idea on its history etc
