DOT 4 or DOT 4 ESP?

Postby motorhomer2018 » Mon Oct 02, 2023 9:29 am

Morning all.

I have a motorhome based on a 2018 2.0 ecoblue transit.

I have had a few brake messages on start up. I put this mainly down to where it's stored is on a slant.

The reservoir is half way between min and max.

Before I take it to the garage I was going to top up the fluid.

But when I phoned a local spares shop he said it might be ESP fluid. On the cap it just says DOT 4.

Can someone please advise on the best course of action

Thanks in advance

Don’t top it up as the pads wear the level will go down if you top it up when you fit new pads it will need fluid removing or it will blow out of the reservoir when the pistons wound back or you may have a leak ,when you change the pads it will be a good time to change the fluid at the same time

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

I was just hoping to top it up. If it went down again, it would show a leak. If not. It would show the pads are wearing.

As it's due it's Ford service in February I was hoping this would get me by for the next few weekends away.

As an aside

Could it be anything else?

If the fluid is low pads low and a leak is the only reason for that what warnings are you getting it could be another fault all mine does is come up with service engine now for any problems

Hello

I am getting a brake system malfunction message when I start it up when it's been stored at on a slope in the compound.

Think I'll buy a little bottle of DOT 4 fluid and add enough to make it 3/4 full. (and put a line in the reservoir). If the message never appears again. Grand.

If however it drops below the pencil line, then I know for definite I have a problem that is beyond my skill level and I'll book it in with my local dealer to solve.

"brake system malfunction message" ... resolved

Postby motorhomer2018 » Thu Mar 14, 2024 9:54 am

Morning all.

I am finishing off this thread in case anyone else stumbles on it in the future looking for help

The problem turned out to be the starter battery that was on its last legs.

As I was unsure whether I would need "Forscan" to reset anything I got a mobile mechanic to do it.

1) remove the seat completely (4 bolts holding it to the seat base)
1a) disconnect the seatbelt tensioner wire to give you extra room if needed
2) remove all the plastic covering the battery
3) remove battery leads
4) lift out battery

fitment was done in reverse.

No "forscan" tool was used so a competent (and strong) DIYer could do it within 30/30 minutes.

Hope this might help someone in the future and save them 1 hour in labour charges.
