Cylinder head bolts- torque multiplier required? 2.0 ecoblue

Postby theoTD » Fri Feb 09, 2024 5:07 pm

Hello all. Just a quick question to those of you with experience in taking the head off a 2.0 ecoblue. Ive read online and in the workshop manual to use a torque multiplier to do the bolts. Is this strictly required? Or will careful use of a torue wrench to the right settings and 90 degrees final turns be fine?
Reason i ask is multipliers and the adaptor for the engine are both incredibly expensive.

Thanks,
Theo

i cant see that ..Head bolts are.
Stage 1 20nm
Stage 2 40nm
Stage 3 90 degrees
Stage 4 90 degrees again
Stage 5 90 degrees a final time.

you may need a 3 foot long breaker bar at those settings ..and i think they are torx plus 60

errr.... maybe the multiplier is because the head bolts have shallow torx centres any rock with a big breaker bar could sort of pull the torx bit out of its hole at those massive amounts. you better mark the bolt heads with tipex before you start, just in case it does.

think you need a friend helping you when you do it .one steadying the breaker bar keeping the extension vertical ..and you pulling on it

Stupid having torx bolts and that sequence...asking for trouble ..CAN YOU BORROW ONE .

thanks for the reply.
Thats interesting. Ive got:
Stage 1:15 Nm
Stage 2:25 Nm
Stage 3:40 Nm
Stage 4:90°
Stage 5:90°
Stage 6: 90 again with torque multiplier.

Looks like, according to photos of new ones for sale (which i'll need ofc) its just standard bolt heads not torx. Might make them a bit easier to deal with. Thats how they are depicted in the manual too.

The engine is out atm, so hopefully can use a fairly short extension to help control the angle. But yeah if i do it with a bar i'll need a friend to help steady.

Good tip with the tipex! I was thinking about what to use to mark out the angles tipex sounds like a good one.

If i can i'll borrow or hire if i can get one with a mount to bolt it to the engine.

I wonder what the reason for it being suggested to use a torque multiplier. Ive not seen that used on the 2.2 engine, or on any other engines i can think off. Very little online about it at all too far as i can tell.
Thanks,
Theo

i think its because you are going to be straining on the bar wobbling as you do it

OR ITS TO STOP FORD EMPLOYEES BUGGERING UP THEIR BACK and putting a claim in.

there is an equally nutz tightening sequence for the crank pulley bolt .

Try and get the longest torque wrench you can even if it means using a 3/4 drive and adapter only ever used a multiplier once for 1258 ft lb bolts good bit of kit made the job easier

Thanks for the help, I'll be giving this a go this week coming providing new bolts etc arrive on time. Will update of anything interesting where I can, there doesn't seem to be much online about these engines yet that I could find.
