New Engine needed?

Postby Jamiecsport » Wed Mar 11, 2026 9:54 am

I have custom sport 2.0 ecoblue and have been having issues of it starting when warm. Generally starts well in a morning but then after being stood for 30 minutes struggles. If I crank it for a while then leave for a couple of minutes it starts fine again. My local dealer did scanning and all live data was normal. They have now done a compression test and have told me that the readings were 170-170-200-200 and suspect the head gasket has gone and will have damaged the head and block. Does this sound correct? They say that a new engine is needed. I haven’t seen any cross contamination in the oil or water and the van doesn’t seem to lack power when driven. Has anyone had similar experience and what was the end solution. Thanks

Well garages way up the price - time involved / Versus labour charge, Plus parts - some garages now charging well over £100 an hour plus VAT

There is talk of a batch of badly made soft valve seats .. which may be the issue.

New engine for garage may be cheaper than cylinder head overhaul when charged to you, cost and effect and warranty comes into it as well .. what they believe is worth there while and they don't want come backs.

You've not said your mileage

You have a lot of things to factor in .. like is the wetbelt due, so new parts needed anyway.

To do a cylinder head overhaul, a garage would have to take the head off and send it to a machine shop for further work .. skim , valve seats... that's why engine may be cheaper.

if you did it yourself it would be a totally different scenario and would indeed work out cheaper.

Note: if it was the piston ring and bore wear "unlikely" .. causing this, then there are plenty of used short engines ( basic block minus pistons, minus crank )on ebay very cheap £120 ish .. because the wetbelts have totalled a lot of them, owner bought whole engine and sold the sound blocks

Cylinder heads are a dodgy buy when used .. and must come with a cam carrier

You'll have to way up the pros and cons yourself

BTW .. compression should be well over 300 on all cylinders, a head gasket would have it low on 1 maybe two .. but rare all 4

Other causes could be wetbelt snapped in the past and turned cam lobes on the shaft - very common .. but it usually buggers everything . boroscope will reveal indents in the pistons.

Forgot about this one forget the unlikely suggestion on last post . IF

Another cause ....... borewash in early models , caused-by fords DPF regeneration method of overfueling the cylinders to assist in regen .. too many regens or failed ones would cause bore wash and cylinder damage and oil dilution. not sure if there was a software update to address this

Anyway, all this is guessing ,.. cant tell you an awful lot say in my chair and not at your engine with the tools

The van has done 68,000 and has had the wet belt changed before recommended time. The garage said it was in good condition still when replaced. Thanks for the help people have given.
