Mk8 2.2 RWD clutch and flywheel change

Postby Sam123 » Wed Apr 22, 2026 4:01 pm

I'm shortly planning on replacing the clutch and flywheel on my 2015 2.2 RWD jumbo (MT82 manual gearbox).

Can anyone confirm whether the gearbox can be slid back enough on top of the subframe to access the clutch/flywheel without dropping the subframe, or does the subframe need to be dropped? If so, am I right in understanding that the rear subframe mounting bolts are very difficult to remove?

Want to know what I'm in for before I start.

Thanks!

i would imagine it would need to be dropped

As regards the bolts not coming undone .. depends on how it's been stored and treated

If It's lived all its life on the prom by the seaside .. then expect trouble
If It's lived on grass or field 90 percent of the time - expect trouble
It belonged to a farmer - expect trouble
Was owned by a groundwork company - expect trouble

i could only find one instance here of someone having trouble ... most of the struggles are subframe on FWD -- gearbox

Just take precautions

Only use hexagon flank drive sockets
Use penetrating oil
Get the blow torch out at the first hint of trouble

all the best.mark

If you're doing it yourself on the drive it can be done, but it can be a real pita.
To remove the box backwards yes the subframe needs to be dropped.
As you suspect the subframe bolts through the rear wishbone mounts can be a fight, if they've not been done before the can rust up the centre of the rear bush (you can tell if this is likely as the bushings are usually shot too) if they do snap the captive nut inside the chassis then sh1t starts to get interesting for onlookers.

Thanks for the replies all, that’s helpful. I think I’ll probably invest in one of those electromagnetic induction heaters in advance.
