HELP… Electrical Fault MK8

Postby Dunham1 » Sun Jun 21, 2026 1:51 pm

Hi

I recently bought a LWB RWD twin wheel dropside with a tail lift (2015 plate)

About a week or so back I noticed the indicators weren’t flashing when locking and unlocking the van with the key fob

After a quick Google and doing some other checks, I realised the hazards, the interior light or the horn didn’t work without the key in position 2 or the engine actually running, if the key wasn’t in the ignition non of them worked

Now it seemed to have progressed, the van started cutting out when the clutch is released, and the battery light flashes, so when starting the van with the clutch in then when you release it, the van just cut out but this is intermittent and since this has started the other issues are also now intermittently working again

I’ve had a general garage and a auto electrician come out and have a look but they only plugged it in and didn’t do anything else once the got no fault codes apart from some quick basic checks of the battery

No fault codes apart from a crankshaft sensor / position code, but when reset it didn’t come back on so got dismissed

Any help would be appreciated, thank you

You are going to have to take a look at a number of things related to: batteries , charging and grounds .. making sure all are ok .. before you do further diagnoses.

Start with the simpler things first .. that is all the grounds/earths, thick lives, checking charging voltage and batteries are good ,,, that is more than a voltage test on the batteries it is a drop test.
Check battery/batteries voltage - should be at least 12.4 volts if fully charged.
Take off battery connectors, clean , terminals and inside the connectors.. unscrew earths/ negative grounds, clean with wire brush , take off red wire from alternator to starter ... clean and re-install.

To help you out here is the BEMM manual "Body and Equipment Mounting Manual" .. this shows the locations of all the grounds.

Have you looked under drivers seat to confirm whether it has 1 or 2 batteries fitted ?
You will lose all ancillaries without ignition on if 1 of the 2 is flat / dead.
