A rather unwell Transit (DPF / limp mode)

Postby danp2 » Thu Sep 24, 2026 6:59 pm

Hi all!

As per my intro I drive minibuses at a school, and unfortunately one of them (a 2017 Transit 2.2) is currently off the road as it’s got the “service now”, “DPF filter full” type of errors and is in limp mode.

It did mainly short runs (as it’s not trusted on the motorway after breaking down twice) which obviously wouldn’t help, but has been looked at by several garages inc Ford but not been reliable in recent years.

It’s due back at the garage soon and in an attempt to avoid throwing good money after bad I thought I’d see if I can help the school at all.

Below is a selection of DTCs (there are 87) and screenshots from me using carscanner OBD tool.

I got some live data (can’t see how to post screenshots) but 256% DPF soot load % and 26 consecutive failed regens don’t sound great.

I’m not sure on the history as I’ve not been at the school that long but apparently they’ve had a DPF specialist look (and Ford as mentioned).

I don’t have the cables for Forscan but could probably get them plus access if it’s going to be revelatory.

I’ve looked at a few videos on YouTube and if it was my money it’d be going to a well respected DPF specialist to scan it with proper tools / clean out the DPF / clean out or replace vaporiser etc… so if there is one in the Hampshire area (or mobile) please shout!

Any advice welcomed! Thanks, Dan.

This number of DTCs means one thing only .. not enough voltage to make the systems work or batteries have been aloud to drain to a very low level.

Test the batteries .. 12.65 volts at a full charge
Do a drop test on the batteries
Remove positive and negative terminals .. clean with wire brush , including posts.

Check earths / grounds to body and engine .. take them off .. wire brush put them back

Finally check the charging system is charging - sort of 13.75 volts and above.

Clear all fault codes

Run engine and see what re-appears

Come back here with the list .. and we will see then what advice we can give you about antyy fault that reappears.

all the best.mark
