Reconditioned engine recomendations please .

Postby Wesbro » Thu Aug 07, 2025 9:50 am

Reconditioned Engine supplier recommendations ? It’s 2015 2.2 diesel custom. Been told I need a new engine. I’ve had a look but it seems a minefield by reading the reviews. I either need one couriered to me for exchange or a reliable firm to supply and fit. I live in the south west near Swindon, help and advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

What's wrong with the engine you have?

It may be easier/better to get it repaired, than fit something unknown

As far as the garage could tell either piston or the big ends it runs, but like tractor. They said new engine or scrap. It owes me too much to scrap sadly

I'm a bit shocked that the garage can't tell the difference between top end and bottom end problems, but Mk7's have been known to melt the odd piston (I think No3 is the usual suspect, but don't quote me on that).
Is it a tapping noise, or is it a more severe heavy knocking noise?

There are a couple of guys on here (that I can think of) who could almost certainly fix that, but are sadly too far from you to help. Someone may know of a mechanic more local to you that can help, and can chip-in with some advice.

NOTE: Some confuse the tapping rattling noises that are just injector washer/ seals -- so wise to get a second opinion .

Spoke to the mechanic, he is saying it’s a piston. Reckons there was air blowing when the dipstick was removed. It’s drivable but sounds awful.

NOTE : air blowing ( called chuffing )with dipstick or oil filler cap removed is also a symptom of failed injector seals.

:D Got a chap looking at it soon, he says if its repairable better off keeping the original engine if not pay a bit extra for a brand new block and skip the hassle of finding a good re con. In all fairness talking to him he seems to know his stuff.

it will probably not be a brand new block from ford, it will be recon / re-manufactured etc ... as last made before 2016

If you're certain that yours isn't saveable, then you might consider a used engine from a van which was scrapped due to body rust, or damaged in an accident, maybe not a head-on collision though.
The newest Euro 4 is now 14 years old, so finding a good one with low-ish miles will be a challenge :(

Better to buy something like this than a recon as youd be around £1000 for new injectors for your engine on top of the actual repair cost + down time while it's getting repaired

Cant argue with that,
with the low miles - looks like a good deal

The thousand pound postage is a little steep though
