Yet another oil change thread, or is it ?

Postby RIPPERTON » Wed Apr 27, 2022 11:37 am

So this is how I change my TC engine oil.
Im a qualified Motor Mechanic, 56yo. Rebuilt my first engine at 11 years old so been around.
I change engine oil and filter every 10,000km. I can keep the oil clean to about 6000km, by 10,000km its almost black.
I work as a courier now so averaging 380km a day. 4000km before the oil change I put 300ml of Nulon engine flush
to clean the pistons and rings and everything else. This stuff really works and keeping the oil control rings and grooves shiny clean is critical to engine longevity.
With the engine piping hot, I pull the sump plug and slightly loosen the oil filter. With the sump empy, screw plug back in a bit.
I star the engine and run it for 2 seconds to empty the oil pump of old oil.
Then quickly spin the filter off and let it drain for a bit.
Then fit a short piece of 8mm fuel line to the end of my air gun. I insert the gun into the oil filter center fitting on the block
and blow old oil out of all the galleries, crankshaft camshafts and turbo lines. I do this 6 times over, takes about 20 minutes.
I get about 300ml of extra black oil our of the block. Then half fill a new oil filter with fresh Castrol Magnatech diesel 5/40.
Half fill is important so there is no air pocket between the pump and filter, gets pressure up quicker.
Total 6.5 liters in the sump and start it. Oil pressure comes up in 2 seconds. The engine oil cannot be seen on the dip stick it is so clear and no old oil in the engine.
Everything inside the engine works better and lasts longer with clean oil. Lifters, cam chain, seals bearings valve guides.
The last pic is how much extra old oil I get out of the block by purging with compressed air.

Personally that’s a lot of mucking about and I don’t like the idea of starting a engine with no oil in even for 2 seconds and blowing air in the system if there is a pice of loose material of some kind you could blow it somewhere that it’s going to give problems,my last job was as a psv fitter and oil changes on them was done with a hot engine drain off remove and fit new oil filter full of as much oil as you could get in and they did over half million miles no real problems.

" A lot of mucking about"
is totally worth it, believe me it works. You can see it in the amount of blowby in the catch can. negligible.
Ive done 16 oil changes on this van and the bottom end is fine. Theres absolutely no lifter, rocker, cam chain, tensioner or piston noise in this engine.
Its had new turbo, injectors, alternator, clutch. Complete egr and cat delete. Made my own aluminium injector base washers, copper sucks.
It never blows smoke of any kind. Plus it has a remap so impressed it hasnt cracked a piston yet.
The 2.2 chain engine is much better than the 2.0 wet belt engine by far.
And take this whirly thing out of you air filter hose for more top end. Its the right idea but its too small and restrictive.

i drain the oil ..do not remove filter, i then put in cheap oil , and the wrong grade as its cheap 15/50. hopefully under £6 a gallon
start her up drive about 5 miles very gently . (dont want to damage anything like turbo bearings or hydraulic tensioners)
out with the cheap and in with the good stuff plus new filter .
yes pre-fill filter ..as its on its side you can only put half in.

after this attention oil has staid golden for about 800 miles ..remember this is a vehicle that has already done 135,000

i think you are being way too fussy and the above will actually do what you're doing in a simpler, quicker way.

Best thing you can do to preserve an engine is never use it for short journeys - especially in the winter, if you're over 60 use your free bus pass to the maximum

all the best..mark

Yes but will the body out last the engine maybe will if you spray the waste oil in all the box sections and all over the underneath.

You’re massively over-thinking this. I have the Euro 6 2-litre engine and I also change my oil & filter every 10K km. My last van (a 2005 Connect) was treated the same from new, and had over 400,000km on the clock when I traded it. No additives, no air guns, no mucking about. Out with the old oil and in with the new.

I’d also add that I haven’t needed to replace turbos or anything else on your list. And as for a remap - Ford’s engineers know how to design engines and software, it’s their job. I put my trust in them, not some back-street internet warrior who can hack software to make an engine do what it’s not supposed to ….

Have a nice day.

This is the key question! Personally, I've never replaced a van due to the engine giving out, rust has been the killer of every one.

He is doing such a huge mileage - 3000 km every 10 days or so (over 5000 miles a month), his vehicle does not have time to rust! .."A rolling van gathers no rust" - it seems, also miles KM'S like that does tend to keep oil cleaner than stop start / cold starts treatment.
