Rust on external rear door hinges

After some advice if it’s possible to prevent this from happening? I’ve seen older transits that have the exposed rear door hinges and some are badly rusted. Can this be prevented ? Any tips greatly appreciated

Vaseline on the hinges.
RUST IS LIGHTER THEN CARBON FIBRE
