Electric windows problem

Postby loot » Fri Oct 04, 2024 10:30 pm

Hi all, transit custom 17 reg mk1 the electric windows only work when you open the door, door closed it sounds like the relay is clicking under the switch but no windows. I'm guessing a broken loom ground I peeled out back but couldn't see anything. I'll need to meter them all but it's it possible that a fuse or something has gone? Cheers .

Being as you said only works when door open, I'd guess break in wiring in the loom where it comes out of the door post and into the door. as that's where the wires get continuously bent and flexed, which leads to failure.

see this video - this is a ford F150 ..so may be similar.

The window switch on my drivers door went bad the other day.
The drivers window closed but wouldn't open, the passenger side still worked ok off the drivers side switch.
The loom into the "A" pillar has been repaired by someone at sometime as it's been taped up.
I could hear a "ticking" behind the drivers door card, like a relay switching on and off.
I pulled the switch from the door card and unplugged it as it felt warm to the touch.
I took it apart, the passenger window switch is a toggle switch that clicks as you move it.
The drivers window switch is 4 rubber buttons that contact pads on the PCB, a bit like in remote controls for a TV.
These I cleaned using IPA and it has fixed the issue I had.
The actual switches you move do have a click from the spring mechanism inside.
I don't think there are any relays in the door itself.
If you have access to forscan, you could try using that to look for switch activation and also remotely work the windows.
That should give you a insight as to whether it's a power issue into the drivers door or a canbus issue from the switch.
It definately seems like a broken wire in the "A" pillar loom though and using forscan will point you to the correct wire colour.

Thanks guys that's great. I'm used to the mk7 and it doesn't have as sophisticated diagnostics as that since it is fuse based, I believe that there are door 'modules' amongst other things on the custom and it makes sense that ids/forscan can diagnose it like that. The fact that it works fine every time as soon as you open the door suggests that in fact it is a broken wire that is getting bypassed when the door is opened maybe another ground or live etc.

I'll be looking at it next week. It would have been cool if they made a double connector that you could unplug and replace or check for continuity, but I think it should still be fairly doable
