2020 Custom Ecoblue 2.0L Fuses & Relays

Postby Kopon » Thu Oct 16, 2025 12:20 pm

So the horn has stopped working, at least from the steering wheel that is. The horn does beep twice if I lock the vehicle with a door open so I know the horn itself is ok. I've found a fuse (No. 12) in the engine compartment fuse box which will sound the horn if I run a positive supply to it. The same fuse also receives 2 pulses of power when locking the vehicle with a door open so the circuit is good from fuse to horn. The real problem appears to lie between the horn button and the fuse box. I've established that there is a constant negative supply to the horn button and also a negative output when the button is pressed. The question is: Where does the negative output from the button go to? I presume it must operate a relay to provide a positive supply to fuse 12 but cannot find any relays anywhere. The only banks I can find are: 1. The fuse box in the engine compartment. 2. The fuse box behind the dash and to the left of the steering column. 3. The body control module behind the dash and to the right of the steering column. There are lots of videos that indicate there is a bank of relays and fuses under the glove box but I can't seem to locate it. Also, the diagrams for the relays don't indicate what their functions are. Can anyone on here confirm where to find the relays on a 2020 Custom Ecoblue 2.0L or better still a diagram of their functions?
Any help greatly appreciated.

Such a fault makes me think that it is "clock spring" related.

This is a coil of ribbon cable within the steering wheel that coils and uncoils . it is how the cable is managed from constant wheel turning ... they do fail!

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/406065295171?

I'm not saying go out and buy this ... I'm saying test this .

and --just been looking at the steering wheel.. pics on ebay ..... symbols on it ... horn minus , horn plus , turn horn off ... whats that about? is that the sound system if it is probably speaker symbol not horn .. well where the horn? .. if it does not appear on the steering wheel and it on a stalk then disregard the above.
then
try looking at the stalk contacts

sorry in a 2006 connect owner .. not familiar

EDIT - horn on airbag ...look behind it at contacts

Thanks, Mark.
No, the horn switch is definitely in the centre of the steering wheel along with the airbag. I've examined it internally and I'm happy that there is a continuous negative earth supply to the switch and also a reliable negative earth output when the switch is pressed. But that's as far as I can test the circuit. I can then pick up the circuit in the engine bay fuse box where fuse 12 can operate the horn when supplied with a positive 12v current. This actually happens if the vehicle remote locking is activated while a door remains open - 2 beeps. It's just the circuit between steering wheel switch and fuse 12 that's somehow not complete. I'm fairly sure there must be a relay on this section of the circuit but unfortunately I can't locate any relays in the vehicle at all. I really need to verify firstly where the relays are located and secondly which one relates to the horn circuit.
The search continues...

a stupid answer maybe

but the owners manual lists all relays and fuses and where they are.

Engine Compartment Fuse Box

horn - fuse 12 - 20 amp

Body Control Module

- not sure if these are breakers

fuse 8 - 5 A Anti-theft alarm horn.
/// is that another horn that perhaps beeps independently of the other horn, and may linked with the locking beeps ????

note ... i don't know what you have, they go by build dates, this info is from one of 4 owners manuals covering 2020

https://www.ford.co.uk/support/vehicle/ ... er-manuals

and note: these clock springs can play up in different steering positions

Thanks, Mark,

Yes, fuse 12 in the engine compartment is easily found and has been verified ok.
Unfortunately the owner's manual that came with the vehicle seems to cover more than one model and the confusing aspect is in relation to the terminology used e.g. references to driver compartment fuse box and passenger compartment fuse box instead of more explicit definitions. In my case, there are no fuses in the passenger compartment. There is one fuse box in the engine compartment, one to the left of the steering column and one to the right of the steering column which seems to be the body control module. The manual will indicate that there is a cluster of relays in the passenger footwell below the glove compartment but, as far as I can tell, there isn't. It also refers to a fuse box under the driver's seat, but there isn't. The confusion seems to revolve around the year of manufacture as I have found reference to 4 targets (3 fuse boxes & 1 relay cluster) for models up to 2019 and then only 3 targets (3 fuse boxes) for the 2020 model. I had therefore concluded that after 2019 the relay cluster had been eliminated in favour of some alternative system possibly via the body control module. But then, in the 2021 manual I see the relays listed again and still apparently in the passenger footwell. Of course, what adds a bit more confusion to the issue is the fact that some of the information may refer to LHD or RHD without making that particular distinction.
Anyway, the only component I can locate in relation to the horn is Fuse 12 in the engine compartment. I have also verified that there is only one horn (twin tone) and this is also activated by remote central locking. I am still convinced there must be some additional components on the horn circuit, more specifically a relay. However, the diagrams of relays do not indicate that any of them control the horn so perhaps, even if I could find them, they would not provide the solution to my problem. Still, I'd really like to locate them anyway!

There's a relay box under the steering wheel on my 2022 Custom.

Image

It's called "Smart Relay Box" by Ford. From what I understand the horn signal goes from BCM to the relay box.

Not owning a transit custom .. i cant tell you anymore .. those 4 manuals are by build date not registration plate year.

i know on some vehicles the glove box has to be removed or panels on dash to get at these things

Next step, go here and download the body and equipment mounting manual BEMM -- it does tell you more about the fuse boxes, content and locations,

ONCE on the site DROP DOWN BOX - order 25 links per page ... then there are two pages of links to download the correct manual

and it jumps from 2018 to 2021 for the custom manual .. its one of those.. note one of them marked 2020 PHEV --- is the EV "electric vehicle" obviously not yours

The image attached is not viewable in this region - U.K.
Can you post it again in a different format?
Thanks.

Hmm...does this one work?

Mine is LHD so the box is below the steering wheel on the right hand side, above the accelerator pedal.
