2014 custom intermittent rough running ,,Fueling??Help

Postby bun7575 » Fri Dec 26, 2025 12:50 pm

Hi everyone , hope you are all good,
I have an issue with my 2014 125hp custom(166k) and quite honestly its breaking my soul, lol.

So , from the start, very very occasionally it would go into limp mode, i worked out this was happening when i would be gently cruising at motorway speeds and would get to a big hill, need to give a lot more gas to maintain speed ,,I went down the A34 twice n 6 months and it happened in exactly the same spot. big steep hill, limp mode . Switch it off and back on , limp mode gone, Nothing for months after.
i pulled code , p0089,,,this code is a recurring theme!
Being so random i decided to let it develop.
Next , in the past 6 months or so, ive noticed the engine sounding more and more "old transit".Bit more knocky, and growly, put that down to 166k.
then recently i genuinely thought it was knackered, on a cold start , got a real noticable metallic sound , possibly a knock.
It was nearly due a timing chain , so i did that,,, tensioner was absolutely toast , but made no difference to metallic knock type sound.
Decided to run it till it expires.
But then i noticed sometimes it would purr like a kitten from cold start , and be completely normal, other times it would rattle and knock like a b**ch.
The metallic knocking is only ever at tickover.
So my assumption is , that im having random fueling issues , that sometimes make it run very noisy .Xmas eve ,i started and knew straight away , it was in noisy mode, so as soon as i got to a fast road i booted it. Limp mode ,,,switched off , back on =fine.....P0089 "fuel pressure regulator typeA" pulled.

Actions i have taken so far...
New fuel filter
New egr
New cam chain kit, (i know this is irrelevant )
New PCV, this was a cheap one , but symptoms are exactly the same .
New throttle body.
reset all adaptions, and done static dpf regen.

When doing a pilot relearn ,,,, the knocking was truly awful on the decel. so much so i had to stop it cos i feared it would go bang.
Wait , theres more lol!!!
for some reason the TPS reading is stuck at 92.94%. I replaced the throttle body because of this , no difference , i also pulled the pedal assembly , and tested it , all seems fine,,,it has has voltage.

And maybe most importantly, fuel pressure at idle , is 2200kpa desired , but the actual pressure fluctuates between 1900to 2350 ish,,,, and i have yet to see the pcv cycle once????
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
sorry for the long post , hope some of you get this far lol, thanks in advance

You've done everything but the injector seals .. which will produce a metallic knock when not sealing .. to test for this pull the oil filler cap .. and look for chuffing out of the hole

P0089 "fuel pressure regulator typeA" out of my knowledge band really

solution is according to google

Replace Fuel Pressure Sensor/Regulator: Often resolves the issue.
Repair Wiring: Fix any damaged wires or connectors.
Replace Fuel Filter: Essential maintenance.
Replace Suction Control Valve (SCV): If faulty.
Reseal System: Address any air leaks.

ive heard than the fuel filters can let in air.. plastic goes brittle with age or cracks when overtightend, they are a known issue

and i think there a bit more to the throttle pedal than just that it has voltage, but don't think it would cause your symptoms.

running foescan in live data mode may give you more info when it happens

When I had all the issues with mine, they were caused by the bcm plugs. Personally, my first place to address dill ve the bcs plugs for any wiring.
The fuel rail might be full of mayo too. So probly worth removing the sensor to have a look abd clean before it gets to the injectors anyway

Well , I've just done the injector seals , must say they were all pretty crappy.... However I'm now waiting on Amazon for a fuel return pipes set as in this cold they were brittle as hell....
Also ordered a pressure sensor while I was at it , so had the fuel rail off and removed sensor, that had a bit of gentlemans relish in it too .
Will update tomorrow,,, guessing next stop will be injectors and fuel pump , but let's hope it's not that just after Xmas, cheers

What have you done about testing/eliminating the egr ?
Id suggest you do the free things first.
A fuel rail pressure sensor....id suggest only get genuine seimens, continental etc whatever it cam with originally.
