Problem _like_ the hole-in-turbo.. but not?

Postby bluebottle » Thu Feb 26, 2026 4:59 pm

So I have a 2013 custom that has been through the whole 'temperature sensor is borked - no wait, there is a massive hole in the turbo pipe because terrible design' thing, so I know the sort of noise it makes and complaints it triggers.

It started doing all this again, which culminated in a super fun time grovelling under the van with jubilee clips and bit of old pipe in a service station carpark, and a bit later, a new turbo pipe.

The twist in the tale is that the pipe didn't seem to have actually holed through completely, and while the jubilee clip fix _did_ (mysteriously??) help for a while, and so did the new pipe - I'm still getting the weird behaviour and temp sensor complaints??

The noise is perhaps most noticeable as I decelerate at a roundabout - it's a sort of.. built up pressure is squeaking out somewhere noise/feel? My partner and mother are both a bit useless in 'diagnose a sound' problems ('ow much??') so I am just driving around saying 'there! listen now!' like I'm starring in Gaslight - and it is erroring on the temp sensor randomly.

Anyone has something like this? Ideas where to look? I do have a flir camera somewhere, I keep thinking maybe looking underneath with that might give some clues, but I haven't tried it yet - thought I might mine the hive mind first..

I've just remembered my partner fitted the new pipe and there was a lot of moaning about how much of a PITA it was, so maybe I need to go check the fittings and maybe tighten the ends.. hmm.

Boost pressure can be lost through:
1. boost pipes (common fault on some, where pipe rubs on alternator bolt)

2. 2013 - i don't know if it has a variable vane turbo or wastegate one .. but it would be the waste gate one .. that can leak at the wastegate.. caused by rust and corrosion usually keeping it stuck open.

3. The EGR system can leak boost if stuck open.. very common .. EGR needs servicing often.

You can stick diagnostic equipment into it to diagnose many of these

but if EGR has not been serviced for some time - i would go strait there .. dismantle and clean .. or replace.

Thanks mark - the egr valve is apparently ‘not the worst’ but it looks pretty gross to me! My job tomorrow - cleaning all the gross black crap out of it while brother in law stares gloomily at the glow plugs that have never been changed and definitely won’t snap off.. looking really awkward to reassemble, get hot, disassemble to get to the plugs for best chances - I don’t know how this is the biggest vehicle I’ve ever owned and yet every job is wildly awkward.

While you're at it clean the boost pipes and intercooler ... gunge from the breather system slowly builds up in the pipes making its way to the EGR where it combines with heat and more carbon, from the exhaust to make basically baked-on carbon, almost the same same as your household oven.. the pipes should be cleaned out- using my own observations .. every 8000 miles. - i recon as the vehicle ages and wears the problem becomes worse... at 140,000 miles, that frequency is what is needed on my connect.

You can mount a catch can .... a device that tries to capture the oil from the breather system, before it enters the boost pipes.

Do your own research on catch cans ... there are dozens of models, and they must be fitted in a way that works.

if you ask me the boost pipe should have a baffle and a sump in it, that you drain monthly

Those ebay part finder lists are a pile of rubbish .. half the time they tell you it does fit when it doesn't.

its only as good as the seller correctly entering the information

and you trusting the part number 1738590 from catcar

at the top of the catcar page says the manifold diagram belongs to all these models

Europe Transit/Tourneo Custom TTF 2012- 3 Powertrain 30301 Powertrain.Engine/Block, Heads & Manifolds 3030120C Inlet Manifold; 2.2 Duratorq TC; Transit 2006-2014; Transit/Tourneo Custom 2012; Transit 2014-; 2.2L CR TC I4 DSL 155PS; 2.2L CR TC I4 DSL 125 PS; 2.2L CR TC I4 DSL 100PS; 2.2L CR TC I4 DSL 140PS; 2.2L CR TC I4 DSL 135PS; 2.2L Duratorq 16v TC

so you put into ebay

this phrase

1738590 ford

BTW .. try bottle cleaners from home bargains or poundland on the manifold ,,,

plenty of strong detergent - like washing powder 50/50 with boiling water

https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/OgkAAeSw ... l1600.webp

some people say poundland oven cleaner ,(oven pride)... i don't know what effect it would have on the plastic ... so that may be good or a big mistake .. i haven't used it on plastic !!
