Seized turbo

A associate of ours had a smoke leak test done at garage and then went away on a holiday.
I was presented with a transit 2018 2.0 which had blocked dpf.
They drove it until it would drive no more, the dpf is full of oil and the turbo has seized.
We have a turbo on order and the engine runs without turbo air and exhaust connections.

So at least engine is OK.
Dpf with endoscope doesn't look collapsed, there is a chalky substance in a ring round the vapouriser mounting point, I presume this is meant to be there? as after grease wiped off its white.

I'm quite surprised at turbo failure at 66k miles it is seized solid, I'm thinking it seems to have blown the oil seal on turbo bearing-so planning on cleaning intercooler and dpf and reassembling with new turbo.

Has anyone had a similar experience please?

Only thing i can think of, that would make the turbo fail at low mileage is the wet belt breaking up and the debris blocking the oil ways.

You may not quite be at wet belt change mileage .. although cautious people are now saying 60,000

But time-wise .. they are saying 6 - 10 years ,.. but not any real results or Cumulative data on this.

So a cautious person would be changing at 6 years or 60,000 what ever comes first.

I would imagine if DPF was blocked .. there would be pressure on the seals in the turbo

I don't know why the van just didn't completely shut down when DPF was blocked .. were systems in place bypassed?

The fault was dpf codes, low boost
Pulled it apart after in vehicle dpf cleaner didn't work.
Found DPF solid with some soot and little oil. 5 ltr of dpf cleaner and mostly soot out of it.
Found the turbo exhaust seized and intake side broken shaft.
There was no debris in oil when we changed oil and filter
I suspect lots of 2 mile or less journeys from what I'm told and Dpf value was 186% max on my autel diagnostic.
Tyres aged and still loads of tread tells another story.
I will ask about wet belt age as it does get serviced I'm told and oil filter didn't look ancient.
Test Drive and we have 1-6% soot reading in filter, reset the dpf from max 186 and it drives fine.

Thought my MK 7 had a few issues, but these Mk9 sound frighteningly expensive.

A 2018 reg van should have had the belts done in 2024 as Ford changed the service scheduled to 6 years or 100K ( whichever comes first),… not that any sane person would want to go past 80k on a timing belt on one of these engines!!

Thanks, I will ask them. Only transit I have prior experience isMk2,Mk5, MK6 and Mk7.

yup .. and like on top of this more gizmos and gadgets (stop start , hill start, LCD Displays,Adaptive Cruise Control, smart this, smart that , electronic hand brake, all which will fail eventually and cost £££££ to fix.
