Ford Transit Custom 2017 very difficult to start

Postby Patrick-ma » Sun Apr 21, 2024 5:20 pm

Bonjour à tous
I have my Ford Transit Custom since 2017, I've always had starting difficulties with it, at first it was once in a while, but now it's almost systematic:

Cases where it works 100%:
1) -Cold temperature, less than 7° (even below 0°)
- cold engine
When I turn on the ignition I have the preheating light which comes on for 4 to 5 seconds, the engine starts easily.

2) -Temperature indifferent
- Motor around 50°
When I turn on the ignition, the preheating light does not come on, the engine starts easily.

Cases where starting is difficult
3) - temperature higher than 10°
- cold engine
When I turn on the ignition, the preheating light comes on briefly for 1 or 2 seconds, the engine does not start. You have to repeat the preheating phase several times for it to start, or wait 2 minutes (the end of the whistle and the start of the electric water pump), when I turn on the ignition, the preheating light comes on for 4 to 5 seconds, the engine starts easily.

Cases where starting is very difficult, or even impossible
4) - temperature above 10
- motor around 20-30°
When I turn on the ignition, the preheating light does not come on, the engine does not start even if I insist. You have to wait before starting again.

There is no DTC fault

The Ford garage told me that it could be a problem of too low compressions, they did not measure the compressions, Ford does not give any indication on the value of the compressions, he suggested that I replace the engine, he did not only 50,000 miles! It runs perfectly, consumes no oil, there is no smoke and it starts very well when the temperatures are very low, like these days in Burgundy near Chablis.

What do you think ? thanks

To find out ..and by the looks of things, be one up and smarter than the ford garage: download forscan ..which is free software for laptop or mobile phone.
Buy an interface lead called ELM 327.

join forum
https://forscan.org/forum/
to learn how to use it

plug it in , read the codes, then see all it has to say about your van.

................................................

may be a faulty temperature sensor or something like that,

or glow plug relay ..

forscan first

thank you for your answer,
I have an ODBII interface and I use car Scaner, I have already checked the DTC errors and the status of the gauges and temperature sensors, I did not see anything inconsistent. I'm going to look at Forscan, see if I find any other elements.

There is a write up somewhere on this forum about starting difficulties on engines once warm. I'm too stupid to remember what category it was, but it was a good read.

I had a warm starting problem with a cbr600 years ago. It turned out to be high resistance on the cam sensor coil. If I out it in a freezer and fitted it, the bike would start. Can't remember how I discovered it. As the sensor wasn't 'broken' it didn't throw a fault. Its signal would have just been useless fur the ecu. Just some food for thought. I think I got to hhe stage where I just started measuring the resistances of all the sensors etc (not many on a bike). I also so desperate I cut out and soldered every plug!

Thank you for your response, I checked the values of all the temperature gauges, I did not find any anomaly, I replaced the camshaft position sensor, it does not work any better.
I'll look on the Forum to see if I can find the article you're talking about.

Hi all, I'm a newbie on here but like a lot of folk I'm struggling with my Transit Custom 2017 2.0 ecoblue 170ps. I'm experiencing the exact same problem as mentioned here. My van has also been into a Ford garage and with no real investigation other than cranking it over, I was told it's probably low compression, and you'll probably need a new engine. I'm only at 70,000 miles and it's been extremely well serviced and driven etc.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE can you let us know if you got to a conclusion with your van and what it was in the end?

Thanks in advance for any further assistance

I have the same issue with my ford transit custom 2017, had new glow plugs fitted and filters cleaned or replaced but no joy. No fault codes so a bit stumped.

Hi all, was there any outcome to the issues a few of you were having? I seem to be having similar problems, this has been going on for a little while now even back in the summer where glow plugs shouldn't of been an issue. Previously I could cycle the ignition on and off a couple of times and this seems to help but a few times recently it has cranked for longer period of time. serviced up to date and all filters replaced. The only thing that did come up recently was "exhaust filter overloaded" which I believe the van then carried out a regen and I haven't seen an error since.
