Complex issue

Postby a1luxminibus » Wed Jun 10, 2026 8:04 pm

I have a 19 plate transit custom minibus(taxi) in August I blew a turbo (about 4th) while I got it home the bus used nearly all the oil I did top it up by a gallon so was still well lubed. The journey filled the dpf with oil as I expected so I had it gutted and writen out (sam212) I’ve also had it remapped to 170 hp after all this. Now the bus has done 242k miles so there is no embarrassment with it.

My problem is it has developed a fault (no codes showing) when the engine is cold it runs perfect but as soon as warmed up it blows a small puff of black smoke then it’s grey/blue smoke like a James Bond car. When the ignition is switched off and back on the smoke disappears and only comes back after a few mins running again switch off engine and back on it disappears. I have a really good mechanic and I have a fair knowledge of transits, but this has both of us scratching our heads. Oh the egr has been mapped out during remap.

Buzz test has been done on injectors and an idle test to check them as well but nothing unusual (almost identical to a similar transit I have. But it is its original injectors

I’ve just replaced the oil separator to eliminate that

Any thoughts would be appreciated

242k - probably early signs of it needing valve guides and seals.

Think this may be record mileage for an ecoblue ... you must have looked after it,

To do a whole examination of it .. you'll be doing a compression test .. and using a boroscope to look at the piston tops .. if they are very clean around the edges .. oil is coming past the rings,

oh what do you mean 4th .. 4th august or 4th turbo

I’ve checked the blow back on it by starting it up and putting a tissue on the filler tissue doesn’t move. My other bus has 250k on it and is an18 plate going superb.

Engines can gum up the oil rings .. slowly turning the oil rings into a device to move oil up the bore not keep it in the sump.. well that's how it begins, the blowby comes later.

seams you are looking for something that isnt wear and is causing it. im without a clue after your mileage .... like said the beginnings

OR

other signs of wear you may have not noticed, which could be unaware of, if it did not have a DPF (gutted)
after descending a long hill ..accelerate briskly ... you'd see smoke pour out.
after a long tick over period the same.

You see - .. no DPF , no captured smoke .. this may be normal.. you've taken parts of the van back to 2009

i understand your thoughts but cant get my head round why it stops smoking when you turn the ignition off and then back on (or stop start does it for you)

this morning the smoke never started until it had been running for half an hour swithched it off and then back on and got another 20 mins before it started?

some other smoke related problems, but "fuel burning black smoke" and not blue grey oil burning smoke are down to .

fuel burning smoke
hole in the boost pipe
EGR sticking
maf sensor needs a clean

other things that may happen
dripping injectors
and im not quite sure about regen on the ercoblue, that is if it has a vaporiser .. possible drip there if so

and you dont say .. what engine you have, some 2.2s on mini buses carried on being fitted for quite a while .. otherwise i assume ecoblue 2.0

The bus had its adblue removed as it had a faulty pump but the vaporizer dripping is a good shout egr blanking plate getting done tomorrow and injectors replaced as well (i suspect the spray patern is gibbed on cyl3
Yes it is a 2.0 clue was Sid 212 and 19 plate
