We have a 2017 Custom 340 built Nov 2017, purchased 2nd hand, not Ford dealer serviced, now about 120K on the clock. A few days ago, started up with difficulty in the driveway, then after a couple of yards at about 1mph totally failed. RAC report states 'engine cranking fast no compression' and 'suspect timing has failed'.

New here, and read some great advice in other threads on this topic, but can anyone advise how likley it is that we need an engine replacement, or whether a (cheaper) repair should be possible? We'll need to get it towed - one tow free on the RAC - but if the first garage inspects but cannot repair, we'll need another expensive tow. So any recommendations for a garage in East or West Sussex (we're in Brighton) very welcome.

If a full engine replacement is necessary we'll need to seriously consider scrap and buy a new vehicle, since the value of this one is only about £10k.

When mine went I was lucky and it worked fine after replacing the cams and housing as well as vac pump and the usual timing related work. Obviously sump off and all the bits of belt cleaned out etc.
could work out costly as injectors need removing which on these vans can be interesting.
From the vans I’ve known to go, the ones that seized after vacuum failure all faired a little better than belt breakages…

Thought I would share the belt condition of what's just came off one of our vans.

2019 Custom 2.0 64K miles. We have owned from new. Running well.

Oil change history
10500M by Ford dealer
22500M by Ford dealer
32000M by myself
41700M by myself
52600M by myself
63000M by Ford dealer

Oil changes done by myself were using Ultra ECO-FE 0W-30 Quantum oil.
The oil pick up pipe was perfect with no signs of belt debris in it.
Guess I'm fairly happy that the oil pick up was good, could convince myself the regular oil changes have helped. For me the belt was ready because of the cracks appearing at the root of the teeth on the belt.

Just watched a video on Peugeot wet belts

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_HMuqtrMGg

A little way into it ..he shows a tool for measuring the width of the belt.

its a "go / no go tool" that he puts down the oil filler hole.

same as this

https://www.amazon.co.uk/TIMING-CHECKIN ... d_source=1

Sort of hard to know what he's going on about, until he explains later in the vid with the belt off.

The belt will swell ..and when the tool will not go over the belt, its time to replace the belt.

As well as the vacuum pump and filter screen, he also says you should clean the turbo oil delivery pipe.

Interesting. Wonder if we could make a Ford version? Think it would fit through the oil filler cap.

My custom is a2021. It has done just over 20,000 miles from new. The oil and filter was changed by ford 5000 miles ago. But that was in September 2024. It does mostly motorway driving and then parked up for weeks on end.

Actually I don’t like driving it I am so worried about the wet belt from too much driving or the DPF from not though driving. Can’t win either way.

Should I get the oil and filter changed now?

my advice on these, that would be advice to a dedicated enthusiast, is every 6000 miles, or every year, what ever comes first, if you rely on a garage to do this .. forget my advice, as makes owning the van too expensive.
