Postby 747_727 » Tue Jul 28, 2026 5:59 pm

I’m looking to but a 2.0 custom soon but have been put off by various reports on exhaust valve seats burning out!!
How common a problem is this?

reported here once or twice in the last few years .. that's all we know.

discussed .. more times .. but reported by real people as actual personnel failures about two.

and that's only an indication of how many people here have experienced it, who have come here to report it .. not the real world account of how many are happening.. don't know where you would get them stats from.

i don't know where google AI get s its stats from .. perhaps it has access to "ALLDATA" an app the mechanics pay for.. they would be in "ALLDATA"

Thanks for the reply.
I couldn’t find much on here about it other than a post when a garage said he is replacing heads all the time!
I just don’t know what van to buy as all modern vans are terrible.

Depends what you want with a van

if you want all things ICE, sat nav, camera, stop start ,and a computer screen in front of you for adjusting AC .. then its what you want

if you want 125,000 5 year warranty, around £20,000 price tag , and non of the above -- then look into the Maxus .. do research on the last few years, not ten years.

NOTE : made in china

I just want a van with a tailgate which is why I was looking at customs as there are more about with a tailgates than any other van but still not many. I own a mk2 Citroen dispatch which I’ve owned for almost 10 years which has been a great van but it’s getting old and worn out now sadly. I’m not bothered about what toys it’s got and I hate touch screens I just want a van that’s reliable which is don’t think I’m going to find lol.

it takes a lot of research
and you can still come unstuck .. you have to look into the future have and ESP these days!

Friend decided that a diesel Skoda Yeti was the ultimate car after a lot of research .. only to have it emerge a year or two later that it had a hidden pending disaster of the wet-belt driven oil pump.

as well as this , he has this looming disaster - . most VAG group cars have a spherical double skinned header tank.. inside the double skin is a pouch of preservative , after a few years the pouch ruptures and sends lots of tiny little seed like grains into the cooling system that blocks your heater matrex

https://www.google.com/search?q=is+a+he ... to+replace

so you have to do research .. to remove this pouch before this happens , is the best thing you can do

use terms like
transit custom faults or vw transporter faults....in google search

The future, never mind reliability, there is a big question mark hanging over diesels .. this government .. who knows what they have planned .. handing powers to the councils, who are now charging you more to park your diesel.

https://www.google.com/search?q=diesels ... ra+to+park

https://www.islington.gov.uk/parking/pa ... surcharges

https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/motori ... a-33225441

https://www.independent.co.uk/climate-c ... 40102.html

it may be that you are happy to know about the wetbelt thing on a transit custom .. and are willing to replace it yourself as an enthusiast mechanic at 60,000 miles .. then it would be not such worry to you.

but then again there are other things popping up that are worrying .. like the £2000 LCD display screen in these cars .. lots of fails .. the adblue system , DPF , the electronic hand brake .. all are not going to make it past 10 years in any car . i recon suicide i could be only solution for some owners .

my advice get used to riding a bicycle .. then the idea of all above is less worry . as you have your trusty bicycle back-up.
yes it scarry .. and thwe bicycle advice is my ESP working

If over 60, it takes two years of riding a bicycle every day .. until you feel; that 10 mile return journey is nothing.

Get riding!

Missed that about valve seat problem on here but when I was doing research before I got mine all the talk at local garages is about the wet belt snapping manly down to Fords service schedule and the wrong spec oil grade and probably running to long before a new belt fitted.
It doesn’t matter what drive system the valve train has they still fail just a list of what I’ve had to replace in my working time
International harvester loader steel timing gear striping / Volvo 244 saloon striped the fibre timing gears / timing chains common in the 70s Ford Vauxhall very common .the small engine Vauxhall at particularly low mileage is still common problem now and timing belts they all have a service life and sometimes it’s not bad servicing that’s the problem back in the day of the CVH mk3 escort we had one fail at low mileage and out of the then one year warranty work decided to change any out of warranty on the fleet and had not been already been done to be changed one had only done 21000 miles and the teeth had cracking .
When you do a check it’s not only Ford that have wet belts the only way to get away from them Is go to the darkside and get a rubbish BEV

I’m pretty convinced that there are many more actual cases than those that come to Web, it’s not a fatal breakdown but a much more insidious problem.
If the van belongs to a large company, they’ll probably never open up the engine and will continue to use it for years even if performance declines (as long as it starts in the morning).
In many other cases, dealerships don’t even open up the engine (at least in Italy); if there are compression issues, they recommend replacing the engine, and those cases of corroded valve seats will remain undetected.

and pile more here

https://www.google.com/search?q=instanc ... cebook.com

i'm not a member of facebook or any of the groups

think a lot of people are posting their problems there instead of here . :(
