2019 Ford Transit high pitch ring/squeak

Postby theclassicladdie » Thu Aug 13, 2026 11:34 am

Hi all,

Wondering if the kind people of this forum can help me! :)

My Ford Transit Custom (2019, 60K mi) began making a high pitched squeak a few months ago.

This has since made two garage visits, with work done:
First garage visit:
- Took the wheel assembly apart and could not see any issues and test drove OK (I suspect they didn't drive it at speed for long).

Second garage visit:
- Nearside/offside disks, pads and bearings have been changed (bearings were not recommended, however I asked for these to be changed with mileage).
- Offside calliper was changed 5 months ago as it was overheating when braking (this resolved this).
- Nearside calliper has not been changed.

Some behaviours:
- More frequent on at 50mph+ driving for 20-30 minutes. Assume something is heating and expanding?
- Have driven 30 minutes before without issues, less common.
- When the wheel is straight, the noise can subside. When slightly right (can't full lock on the motorway lol), the noise increases. When the wheel is left, it can make a low pitch howl.
- Braking will totally remove the noise
- The noise is definitely generating from the front of the van, as it gets louder when cars pass me and echos of the car
- Wheels are new in January
- No smell or extreme temps from the wheel assembly

Here is a couple of videos of the noise.

I've spent a fair bit of money in labour and parts to fix this and its still going on. My plan is to take it to a separate garage, but does anyone have anything I can ask the garage to look at specifically based on that? I just don't want to be throwing parts at things that don't need replaced.

Thanks! :)

Have a look at the steering pump pulley .. these have been known to come loose or brake off .. there maybe a phase before that, were it starts making noise .. i don't know.

some had plastic ones, some had metal .. some three bolts , some with peened over centre fixing over plastic .. its the peened over one that fails

Is it very responsive to any accelerator pedal movement?

Does it make that noise on the over-run?

If the answers are "yes" then "no" then it sounds like your turbo. My van started sounding like that that a month or so ago. I've a 2019 Transit Custom with 71,000 miles ... it's just had the wetbelt done and the mechanic said, as soon as he heard my van, that's a broken turbo mounting bracket (it was) and your turbo will need replacing soon. He does a lot of Transits... a local window & door replacement company run a fleet of ~20 Transits and he does all their work for them.

Hi both,
Thanks for replying.
I have checked both items:
- Steering pump pulley doesn't show any signs of damage
- Doesn't increase with accelerator or over-run, but interestingly when having a wee look under the bonnet I've discovered this black soot, is this relating to the turbo as you mentioned?

No worries but thankyou for your help regardless.

Had another look myself, can't really see anything. Will take it to a different garage for another opinion and will report back if I get any good news..

Hi,
Actually having a look again, not sure if the rear of the discs are supposed to look like this? If anyone has any ideas?

some scoring , perhaps small stone embedded in the pad

that would make a ringing noise
