Hi

As a HGV Mechanic of 30 yrs and a big supporter and user of Transits since the 90s,, I must admit I had reservations when I purchased my 2015 2.2 Custom crew cab L1 Limited back in 2017
I had and still have a Transit connect which I bought in 2005 at a yr old and to my mind this has been the most reliable van I have ever owned now having 172 000 miles,, anyhow back to the Custom !
In 2017 the Euro 6 2.0 ltr engine had only just come out so 2.2 was the only real option,, I wanted 6 seat 155 ps manual in white with all the extras and found one with 29k for 17k,,, bargin
Now I do all my own service and to be honest the 15000 mile service intervals that are in book are a little optimistic especially for a euro 5 egr dpf engine,, ie lots of fuel dillution
I am a bif fan of oil samples,, so once I had purchased the van I changed the oil (5/30 low saps) and ran it for 6 000 miles I then took a sample and sent away,,, report came back Change now ! high fuel dillution,,, this concerned me and i took to a ford dealer to have a full health check, including Dpf differentials checked and also make sure Dpf regen cycles were being carried out at proper intervals,, all came back ok,, so i decided that I would change the engine oil every 5 to 6k miles,,, nearly 7 years later and now with 95k on the clock the van has proved itself,,, very reliable never had an issue at all apart from thermostat,,,, and general running issues like pads and discs,,, I have had all the abuse by the anti transit brigade telling me its only a matter of time but even the VGT turbo is still operating well,, i actually checked it last month, so if you want a 2.2 2015/16 engined van I can recommend,, but you need to know its history and you need to maintain !
As for the 2 ltr I know several owners that have had both injector issues and wet belt issues so i personally,,, unless buying brand new would stay clear from a used 2ltr,, although I am well aware if I wish to carry on being a transit owner I may have to have one next,,, not sure if the 23 on models have been redesigned in any way engine wise,,, any experts know if the new models are any better

I had a 12 plate 2.2 155 new and thought it was awful very unrefined and sluggish compared to the 2 litre as soon as it hit 100k it was gone, there was the oil pump issues at the time and the dealer i used was totally hopeless!

[quote="My van hates me"]
Ford outright said my engine was toast and it was 8k+ for a new one. Got it back good as new for 2k inc. labour.

My partner's Transit Custom a 2019, that's just hit 55k with FFSH failed to start whilst it was at the body shop for repair. The vehicle was recovered to our local Ford dealership and they said the belt had delaminated. I said so ok, why aren't we dropping the sump off, cleaning the strainer, getting rid of all the bits of belt and fitting a new belt. They said the engine has lost compression. I asked to see the report and still 3 weeks later I am yet to see the report.

You said you got it back for £2k, is this for a belt change and clean up all the fragments? We have been quoted £8,500.00 for a recon engine. Ford have offered to pay £4,100 of that, but I feel insulted that the engine has failed so early and Ford know it's their awful engineering that's caused this issue! The new engine is ordered, but I am tempted to get it recovered to another garage and get a second opinion on the compression. I smell a rat with my local dealership.

Any thoughts...

I wanted to throw in some info as it maybe useful.

I've had a 2018 transit since 14k miles and now at 73k it's been great. I've just put it through a major service and MOT which done by ATS Euromaster (they serviced more areas than Ford were going to.

Anyway what I'm getting to is the cost for the cambelt/wetbelt changing by my local ford garage:

Quote:
We give two options for this first is just cambelt £950.
Or cambelt sump removal and oil pick up/oil pump belt replacing £1350.
And is a 2 day repair.

I have a 2017 custom limited which I have had from new. I changed the belt (did it myself on the drive) at 21000 miles as the recommendations I saw were 60000 miles or six years and as mine was six years old at the time I did it. The timing belt and oil pump drive belts looked like new but I would expect them to at only 21000 miles. The van clocked over the 25000 miles mark yesterday and all is well as far as the belts are concerned but I have a shed load of other problems with error messages (some there from pre belt change) which are a pain. I regularly get "service required", AdBlue sys malfunction service requited", "Charging System Service now" (this disappears if I turn off the ignition and turn it back on again), "exhaust filter full" and AdBlue sys No engine start in XXX miles. The van pulls like a train until the "service required" messaage comes up and it struggles to go uphill. It disaappears after about 10mins and you cn feel the power return to normal and off it flies again.

Have a 66 plate 2.0L custom which is an ex British gas van so regularly serviced using Ford parts. The van has just cleared 122k and was booked into my local garage that I trust for a service. The wet belts were changed last by Halfords at 112k but i had asked that the sump be removed to check on any belt debris and the oil pickup changed.
The garage reported that they found a lot of debris in the oil and oil pickup and that there were signs that delamination was occurring after only 10k on the replacement belt.
I contacted my local Ford dealer to report the findings. The van had been part of a recall for the belt inspection but he appointment had been cancelled by Ford last minute and I had heard nothing since to rearrange the inspection.
I had the transit towed to the Ford workshop and left for the inspection. In the meantime I pursued Halfords who provided invoices showing the purchase of genuine Ford parts for the wet belt change at 112k. These were sent to Ford. Ford have now declared that because the belt was changed in April 22, it was now out of warranty even though it has only done 10k and that there is nothing more they can do.
They have never even given a conclusion to the inspection they should have done, I am guessing not to incriminate themselves?
Does any one have any idea on how to proceed or have had similar issues?

My 2018 custom limited DCIV L2H1 has just clocked over 6 years old, and so due to the revised 6 year/100k service schedule is currently having its belts and idler changed (the van has only covered 27800 miles), I’ve been quoted £1451 for the work (£1083 for the belts, Idler, Cover, sump etc. and £368 for a full service) at an independent Ford dealership.
Due to the low milage, I expect the old belts to still look like new as it has had the oil and filters changed every 6000miles and only ever the correct spec Magnatec WSS-M2C950-A 0W-30 oil & genuine filters fitted.

All done, collected the van last night… The old belts looked fine, no missing teeth, no delamination and no crap in the sump or strainer.!!

The total cost inc. service and VAT was a few pence under £1390 so £55 less than originally quoted. The dearest part was the timing belt cover @£141 and surprisingly the sump assembly was only £35.27.

Chatting to the service manager and one of the mechanics, they said that they are currently doing 2 or 3 a week as suddenly every 2.0L Ecoblue van registered before 2019 that hasn’t already had the belts change is now due or over-due, and so they are starting to have issues getting the timing belt covers, and often have to wait a week or two for them to arrive after they are ordered.

thats good news for some

if oil changes are done well before time (noting ford say 30,000)..and mileage low ..belt change period not so critical
