Dipped or high beam?

The reason I ask as my connect does not have the magnified lense, just the bulbs.

If I was to get HID, not sure, on dipped as I use it the most or high beam?

They can't be used in standard halogen lenses. They need protectors.

To clarify.... this is a ridiculously in depth subject..... VERY briefly though.... a halogen bulb has one hot spot or burn point. HID has in fact 2. It lights at 2 different sites in the "bulb". Therefor the beam pattern is all wrong in a halogen headlight as it literally sprays the light field everywhere. Very good nearfield whiteness but zero light by 10 meters off the bumper where you want it. That's why we are all dazzled by youngsters with hid kits in halogen headlights!

Projectors only. And never in the high beam due to the above reason and slow start up times on the flash. :)

The second light point is just a small amount of light bleed from the base of the bulb. Decent hid bulbs made for reflector lights have a shield to prevent light scatter. http://www.philips.co.uk/c-p/85126XVS1/ ... light-bulb

Anyway, Chelsea has a Connect to he's not really going to get much relevant info here

Those aren't proper xenon! A nice halfway house though and a better solution than an hid kit.

Proper xenon has two burns not a bleed and require a ballast to ignite and run. Oh and a projector lens as stated.

I take your point about the connect though!

Err.... I thought you were on about them going in a standard headlight unit?

They are for an existing xenon set up.

They still need to go in a projector headlamp, have self levelling and washers.

If it were a case of a w*** 80 quid HID kit doing the job then why don't manufacturers fit them instead of the 1500 quid xenon option?

It makes me laugh that people expect xenon light from a halogen tuned lens using an 80 quid aftermarket part.

Projector is the ONLY thing that works. Period. Show me one single oem exception to that rule.

There are none!

Anyway, it's all old tech now. LED is nice and laser looks ridiculous

No they don't, plenty of OEMs have used HIDs in reflector clusters.

Yes indeed, so it's a half way house. To do it properly you need to do it properly I'm afraid.

I see no xenon in reflectors from factory, this is just Phillips cashing in on a market full of people who want add crappy hid kits to their halogen set up.

We are both old enough to know that you can't get the same result from this as you would from a projector.

I know you're just arguing the point here.....

Yes they can go in a reflector.

Should they? Will it be a good result?

No.

It may however dazzle less of us on the road but a halogen reflector doesn't throw the xenon light correctly, they have tuned this lamp to make it acceptable.... but will the thousands out there with their HID kits in halogen headlights fit these? Phillips certainly think so. I don't.

Honda, Peugeot, Renault, Nissan, Volvo to name a few have had xenons in reflector headlight clusters in the past. Nowadays, Mercedes and Porsche for example offer entry level xenons coupled with reflectors.

I didn't know that... I stand corrected on that if so.... but I bet lots of r&d went into the lens and or the bulb.

It wasn't just lobbed in there and off you go. Like the original point of this discussion.

Not really. I'll give you the benefit of doubt as the thread was started before you joined the forum. Tran59 (the OP) and myself didn't just 'lob in a hid kit', we had both discussed things with HIDS4U during this and previous projects, as a result neither of us had problems. Sadly, despite the original info, lots of people knew better and 'lobbed' in 55w kits and ebay specials. But hey, they knew better

Yes I'm new here but have discussed this on a few places.

I'm sorry if you felt I was referring to you as one of the "lobbers" it wasn't intended. They are out there though! 8)

We haven't even discussed the temperature rating yet and the fact that anything over 4300k that isn't in a projector has disappeared by 15mts blah blah blah. We are all getting bored I'm sure....

Everyone should do as they see fit. The end.

Funnily enough I just realised I had a car with xenon in reflectors!!! Haha. I'm the biggest hypocrite on here!!

I'm named after it! It was a Volvo s60r probably my most favourite car. I bought it back in 05 1 year old..... the funny thing is the headlights were utter rubbish!!!! Looked great but everyone on swedespeed forum was moaning about them

We did somewhere, we suggested 5000k as 4300 wasn't available, so 5 provided the most light on the road, which is what Tran and I wanted.
