I think the answer is obvious

Swappable battery cells!

You roll up to the station and there's a jobbins that swaps a flat cell for a full cell.
Job done.

Example of simple mk1 reloading system :P

Re: Phev actual range

Postby Ampup » Wed Feb 17, 2021 9:19 pm

Hi,

Had the PHEV 3 weeks now, but best range showing (and actual driving) after full charge is on.y 18 miles not the 30-35 Ford quoted.

Interested to know what range other PHEV owners are getting

There’s no-one more environmentally conscious than me. All my timber comes from FSC-certified sustainable sources, every scrap of sawdust and every timber offcut is used to power the heating in my workshop, all my colour finishes are water based and solvent-free, all of my timber oils are plant-based using linseed, soya, tung, sunflower and thistle - to give just three examples. I’m 100% in favour of electric vehicles, especially when the juice isn’t being generated by a coal-fired power station.

But 18 miles on a charge? Or even 30-35? That’s absolutely useless. It seems that Ford have just jumped on the bandwagon before the technology allows them to produce a van with anywhere close to a decent and usable range. If they came up with something like a Tesla S which does 400 miles on a charge = now you’re talking. I’ll pass for the time being.

Is that serious :?: That would barely get you between service stations on The M40

I thought it was a recurring typo :P

I Guess the good news is a petrol engine is available in a Transit again, even if it is only the 1.0 Ecoboost
I do think Loots idea of swappable battery cells is a realistic solution for all electric cars though. All manufacturers use the same battery fitment and some sort of automated replacement could be done in seconds, drive onto a platform and it removes and swaps from underneath. You heard it here first, Loot, I'll pay you a licence fee when I patent them...

All electric vehicles are pretty shite in cold weather. That’s why Tesla batteries are temperature controlled.

An English fella has developed a battery for that very purpose, I'll see if I can find the details.

Buying electric just isn't viable.... yet. Hopefully things move quickly and it will become viable.I would love a PHEV custom but unless you drive your van 8 miles to work and 8 miles back it isn't ready yet. Yes, it will torque fill and work well as a hybrid but that's not really the point for me.

I have access to 2 EV''s... my Dad has a BMW 2 series that for him is perfect. He only does short local trips and he averages 70 odd mpg and has only filled his petrol tank 4 times in 24 months ownership. (Its a 30 litre tank iirc.)......So perfect for his usage.

My good friend is lucky enough to have a Model X Tesla with every possible extra. An amazing machine that staggers me every time I travel in it....I did however beat him home from a golf trip as he had to make a stop for over an hour to charge up.... but that was poor planning. Tesla have the infrastructure to support their vehicles and a well organised person can genuinely use that car as full replacement to an ICE vehicle.

There is nothing in the commercial sector......yet. It will be good to watch it develop and jump in the market when the time is right.

They can’t keep the changing points working on the motorways so what change do they have of that as well .
