Winter wheel size.

Postby Gassy » Sun Aug 26, 2018 8:19 pm

Hi Guys

Ive got a set of steel 16" wheels and snow tyres fitted which I use in the winter months on my limited on the front instead of the alloys , now I'm thinking of changing to a new custom sport which will be running 17 or 18" wheels as standard . Is it possible to stick these on the front when weather bad or is this a big no no and should use the same size wheel and tyre?

Cheers

You can change the tyre size no problem, although all 4 should be the same size to avoid abs/tc issues and the size should be updated on the vehicles configuration data.

You can compare the sizes on a tyre size comparison site and see what the %difference is?

Also if you have tyre pressure monitor system that need programming or new valves or valves swapped over.

No idea if you can have 2 sets programmed in, would save a lot of messing though :-)

How can I tell if my vehicle has a tyre pressure monitoring system?
I have a 2017 Limited, I have 4 new spare alloy wheels and tyres (the same as fitted to my Limited) that I bought off eBay ready to fit with winter tyres once National Tyres starts selling them for the season.
I want to be prepared when I take the van to the tyre shop.
I seem to be getting very good mileage out of my current original Continental Tyres, I’ve read on this forum of some people only getting 8000 miles out of the front tyres. Mine at a 30317miles inspection were NSF 4.8mm, OSF 5.4mm, both rear 8.0mm, is this unusual? or was the previous owner a very careful driver.

Let a tyre down and if if says check tyre pressures
You've got tpms :D
Have to let quite a bit out mind
Probably about 10 pounds
It should be in the menu to set tyre pressures any road up

I think the 8000 mile tyre of which you squeak
Is an 18" sport wheel :?:

Thanks big John Thomas for that tip, I’ll let at least 10psi out next time I’m at a garage with a good air supply to top it up again.

If you want to have summer and winter sets and swap them, just get a second set of Ford TPMS sensors and fit them. When you swap the wheels the van will pickup the new sensors. You will need to reset them in the menu if the tyre pressures are different. No programming is needed. Could be different on the new shape 2018 model but yours is just a very basic system not showing actual tyre pressure for each tyre.

Does you van not need to be told which sensors belong to it ?
Say you were parked in turnip field full of transits or just next to your spare set of wheels how would it know the correct sensors to ask the pressure?

The sensors only transmit when the wheels turn. Stationary they don't.
The car whill know which sensor is where whith help of the ESP / ABS sensors and computer. Everytime the car makes a turn, the wheels turn at different speeds and the computer can make out where the sensors are fitted. Innitially it will take a couple of minutes (corners) before the car has learned this.
Ones the sensors have been recognized, the car stores there code.

Nederbieg, Thanks, you have explained this much better than I could.

The only down side is the price of each sensor is about £30 - £35, so it adds to the price of the new set but well worth the expense in the long run as swapping the sensors every time would be a right faff.

I have done this. 18" for summer, original alloys with winter tyres/spike spider chains for winter in the alps.

So there's a dwarf that lives inside the Tyre and he shouts to the van the pressure
But only when he's spinning ?
