Transit custom fwd 125. CV boot drive shaft

Postby Butterfingers2018 » Tue Sep 11, 2018 8:06 pm

Hey as title says I was wondering if there is any tutorials floating about on how to do driver/ off side drive shaft. From what I've read have to do drive shaft as can't jus do inner CV boot but please correct me if I'm wrong. What size is the CV hub bolt? What tools are essential and any tips much appreciated. symptoms are extrem vibration under acceleration. Wrecking my head as ages but finally found inner seal bust and grease everywhere.
Cheers

Anyone got any info? Dont think I'm being lazy and not checking forum/web as have spent hours but can't find anything directly related to custom? Quite a novice mechanic so any tips at all no matter how trivial they might seem to you pleassseee...

The boot is just the rubber bit that fits over the cv joint. You have vibration so think that something there needs replacing yes?

Has it been curbed or other force trauma to cause the driveshaft or other bit to be unbalanced?
Are there any noises there?
Have you inspected the drive components otherwise?

Thanks for your reply. No noises at all just the vibration more so in higher gears. I've visually checked around rubber seals and stuff but don't really know what I'm looking for at the same time.

Have you done the basics like swap front wheels to the back, jack up the wheels and spin them and waggle then side to side top and bottom go look for play/stiffness.

And most likely, checked the brake slides on the calipers.
They get stiff and don't slide correctly which causes heat and wobble.

Again thanks for the reply. Just got tyres lined and balanced hoping that was same as switching them?
Have checked for wobble in bearings etc all good. When you say brake slides do you mean pads rubbing or piston or does they equate to the same thing? Sorry probably being silly but new to trying these things, in fairness tho been more of a space isusse than laziness. Well that's my excuse anyway :|

So checked brake slides last night felt ok but greased them up a little anyhow. So does anyone know if you can replace inner CV boot separately or do I need to replace drive shaft? This may or may not be the problem but it will need doing anyway, but by all means any other suggestions to vibration appreciated. I'm just hoping and praying it not dmf etc which I have seen mentioned on here.
Thanks

Just to finish off if anyone is having the same issue of van juddering (vibrating) in my case seemed to be more at lower revs and speed but could get through it at motorway speed +. Changed the drive shaft the one with the bust inner CV boot now van is perfect. I previously had many things tested including injectors and was almost set on having the dmf replaced as it was wrecking my head. Worth checking for anyone with similar symptoms. Also I found out along the way the drive shafts for the fatter transits are inter changeable with the customs(same splines on ends) and are easily half the price.
