Plug-in hybrid electric transit custom

Postby clemmy » Wed Sep 12, 2018 4:23 pm

Anybody has info on this? Recently presented at Hannover exposition, but few test drives already in use in London since one year.

Press reports from Hannover says mass production will start in 2019. Don't know what countries will it be sold, and if there will be a passenger version..

Interesting anyway, could be a nice alternative for people living in big cities facing diesel ban...

Sounds interesting, wonder how much it will cost & how far the real range is, and how it goes when loaded.

At some point they are going to bring in electric vans, and a range extender is a much better solution than having to stop for a recharge every 100 miles or so.

VW are also doing the E-BUZZ, which will go into production, but that is a new from the ground up electric vehicle, so probably lighter and will go further on a charge.

Yep, sounds interesting but I don't really understand how the range extender works. As far as I know the petrol engine cannot be used to drive the vehicle, but can be used to charge the batteries that power the electric motor. So, if I'm going to drive over large distance in a single trip, I would power up the petrol engine while driving, maybe since the beginning of the trip... So, at the same time while driving, the electric motor will be discharging the battery, and the petrol engine will be recharging it. Is the recharge rate comparable to the discharge one? Will it be able to continue driving until I have petrol in the tank? And when finishing petrol, will I be able to just refill the tank and start over again?

If it's like that, something like that might become my new drive, a few years from now.

I would think sheer laws of physics says even if you could drive on electric whilst charging with engine running it would be less efficient, as it's another energy absorbing action in the system? So, in which case, although theoretically driving on electric it would in fact use more fuel and cause more pollution? Probably work to get round congestion charges, and various laws, but in reality be worse for the environment and the pocket.

As an aside, I read an article a while back regarding having to replace the infrastructure nationwide to cater for vehicle charging. It said that far from just installing new cabling to supply enough power to factories/housing estates etc they would have to uprate the power lines on pylons. This would mean fitting new pylons to cater for the extra weight of the uprated power lines.

Mass use of electric vehicles will never happen, it's a physical impossibility in this country.

??? Isn't rail use entirely different to road though, and wasn't the primary use of diesel over electric to eliminate the need for huge and very expensive auto boxes? Think of the size of the gear lever if they went manual

if the engine is primarily to drive a generator, I'm no engineer but I am quite surprised that they have not moved away from piston engines to the rotary w*** engine, as it seems to have everything an electric hybrid vehicle is looking for. I'm sure even BJT would not be adverse to having a humming w*** up front
Any of you engineering types have a good reason for not using the rotary engine in this capacity?

Rotary( w***) Engines are not as efficient as piston engines and won't meet any modern Emission Standards!
As Euro5 became standard, the last w*** in a car (Mazda RX7) was discontinued because it failed to meet the norm.

Regenerative braking makes it more efficient than pure ICE.
Also, the range extender is small, and runs at its most efficient revs and throttle position. It doesn't need enough torque to accelerate the vehicle, only enough power to keep up with the average demand. So the engine is smaller and doesn't run on a closed throttle (which kills efficiency on a petrol engine).

A lot more of the fuel burnt is turned into useful work than an ICE driving the wheels.

Plus, you can plug it in to charge. While not more efficient due to losses in distribution, if the generation is renewable that's a win. Local air pollution is a massive gain from this kind of vehicle compared to pure ICE.

can anyone tell me how they are going to make this possible within the construction industry ? machines and massive dumper trucks in the middle of no were and the only access is generators

which will burn the diesel fuel they want to ban by 2045 "road vehicles"

so my question is how they going to make construction machinery electric " my answer is never  "

to make more electric means burning more fuel in power station to keep the demand going.

and if they think nuclear is the way ? then were does all that waste go, its toxic and has to be buried under ground out of human contact ! but what about the animals and insects that will live round this waste ?

Full torque from zero rpm then
But
whats the latest trending meaning of ice ?

And why do i get my post deleted when i ask what ice is ?
Is it tin foil hat secret forum stuff ?
