Glass in barn doors

Postby armrest » Sat Sep 15, 2018 7:44 am

Hi, I have a 2015 limited custom and was thinking of putting glass in the barn doors and cutting a hole in the bulkhead so that I can fit a rear view mirror, has anyone done this

I have fitted the rear view mirror to mine :-) I bought a fancy lcd 1 for 30 quid off eBay. I already have the rain sensor etc so it was plug and play.

Someone else cut his bulkhead and fitted a plastic window. You can buy them already done with glass and a mesh grill as factory standard.

Not done the windows on the custom but have on the mk7, it is easy enough to do. You normally have the seam on the inside that you can follow with the cutter. 2 options, drill couple of holes in the corners that are big enough for a jigsaw blade to fit in and use a fine steel toothed blade and go around with that, gold the jigsaw steady though as it can batter the metal making it jagged and the base can knock sh*t out of the panel scratching it. Maybe some tape and sponge or something for protection?

Option 2 is the thin cutting disk, 1mm. These are clean on the straights, a little tricky on the corners. But the flaw in them is that they fling molten steel everywhere so you really need to cover everywhere on the van even the glass etc. You may consider removing the doors away from the van which is good but consider door alignment, maybe get a cd marker pen and draw around the hinges so that you can instantly line then up on refitting.

The rest you should watch YouTube for instructions, you buy a fitting kit which is cleaner, prep m and adhesive etc.

Thank you Loot for all the information, I think I will use a jigsaw it will be a lot easier than the cutting disc, I will keep looking around for some ideas for the bulkhead glass, I have the rain sensor cover fitted but there is no option to fit the mirror to it, it is just a flat surface, does the rain sensor just clip on and off, do I need to get one for a Tourneo, I have had a look on Ebay for the rear view mirror and found this onehttps://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Ford ... 1438.l2649

If you have the big plastic cover then on the face that you see you'll see there's a tab, push it and it'll fall inside the cover, the cover is 2 halves which split apart, 1 inside the other just be gentle, you may break a tab or 2. Once split you'll then see the metal square iirc and the new mirror will slot to it then you refit the plastic to it.

Thank you Loot, I seem to have a different rain sensor than the one you are talking about,it is smooth and have no tab to push out, the photos are not very clear but you may get some idea, as I said earlier it is a custom limited 2015, Would a rain sensor for a tourneo fit or are they different, I am not having much luck searching online

Hmm mine has the rain sensor and the front camera, my plastic is much wider than yours, wasn't aware that they had more options Lol.

What you need to do will be to remove that plastic trim somehow, hopefully you'll still have the metal tab that is bonded to the glass.

Here's mine

If you want to fit a rear view mirror, you will need the following parts:

interior trim panel BK21-17D568-AAW (lower part)

interior trim panel BM51 17D550 (upper part)

mirror 014276 / A080414

The mirror slides on a metal tab
glued to the windscreen which can be bought as a replacement part.

the bottom trim panel slides on the mirror and the upper one connects to the bottom one.

Thank you for the photos Nederbelg, that explains how it all works, I am going to take the sensor cover off today to see if the metal bracket is a already fitted underneath, very unlikely I think, where did you get the parts from, I am not having any luck with searching on Google, is the metal bracket fixed to the windscreen with epoxy
