instrument cluster issue?

Postby gregd72002 » Mon Sep 24, 2018 9:50 pm

Lads,

Recently I have notice that most of my dash lights are not working. When I switch the ignition to on (engine still off) I can only see the ones on the photo (plus glow plugs light for a second or two)

No indicators, or no headlights indicator (despite having lights on), battery led, oil led, etc. nothing.

The things that work - speedo, revs, fuel gauge and coolant temperature gauge. The van drives normal.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

electrical problem? transit custom

Postby gregd72002 » Wed Sep 26, 2018 12:31 pm

Hi,

Re-posting my question with some further info. Basically I have got a strange issues with my custom:
- it starts and drives as expected
- but leds on instrument cluster do not indicate any of: headlight, indicators, low battery, handbrake engaged, seatbelts not fastened, airbags (might be more)
- all the individual components do seem to work (i can toggle headlight, indicators) but they do not come up on the dash when on
- the dash work for speedo, gauges, millage, revs

Today while driving I lost indicators entirely (no ticking, not blinking). They magically started to work after a few minutes again. Yesterday I had some work done on the van that involved removing front door wiring loom so this might be related to that only...

However the dash led issue is consistent and has been so for some weeks now.

So here I am scratching my head how to approach the problem. Some ideas that cross my mind:
- battery is on the way out - how do I test it? I've got a spare leisure battery, would it make sense to temporarily plug it as main battery to test?
- I fitted in switches to rear cargo lights - could this cause any issue (short circuit, change in resistance)?

Anything else I should be checking?

Thanks in advance!

I run further test:
- I’ve replaced battery and disconnected rear cargo light - didn’t help
- run cluster test - all lights turn on as you would expect so this does not look like IPC issue

The van drives as expected, also all indicators, lights etc work on outside but don’t show on the dash when activated.

I do have access to IDS and VCM2 but not sure what else to check there.

Anyone?

Yes, it does. I did almost 500 miles the last 4 days and it drives flawlessly. When I got low fuel - i had a warning on the display saying 50miles to empty but the dash light did not turn on.

I've got a pal who has a similar problem with his dashboard. Half the lights don't work now, and the "radio" display has gone out too. Van still drives fine, but dealers can't seem to fix it.
I was more than a little concerned to hear his story while I was looking for a custom myself.
In the days gone by, it would have been a bad common earth somewhere, but now, who knows?
If you find out what it is, post it, and I'll pass it on.

Cheap and easy things to try;
unplug the connectors from the speedo cluster, fuse boxes, and BCM, (one at a time) and re-plug them in, and see if it makes a difference. Ignition off, don't do it when running

Took me good 2 hours to disassemble the panels but I have replugged everything I could on bcm and the cluster. The cluster has only one small connector - I think 6 wires or so.
The problem is still here.

This morning I booked it with Ford. But the appointments is only on 1st Nov. Meantime I run out of ideas

One more thing to add to the story:
- ABS has DTC U0422:68-0B that I am not able to clear using IDS nor Forscan

I am kind of terrified that Ford will charge a fortune for this / write it off... and I have been working on the van for the last 6 month converting it

A minor update - dropped the van off at another 'tech' garage and they found out that the aux can bus for the dash is off. They think this is due to misconfiguration somewhere (most likely bcm). They will be trying to re-configure it or reprogram it online... fingers crossed

The garage believes the issue is down to BCM. So they suggest to replace it for a second hand one. My current BCM part no: BK2T-14B476-BP

Has anyone replaced BCM in their Custom? Would BK2T-14B476-BU or BK2T-14B476-CP work too?

Happy days, problem resolved. Turned out to be the instrument cluster fault.
Replaced and recoded a second hand one and all is working as it should.

Now I just need to sell the spare BCM as this was a missed diagnosis.

Anyone wants a half working IPC? :D
