Intelligent Speed Assist

Postby rymrks » Wed Oct 03, 2018 2:57 pm

I have recently taken delivery of a new 2018 MY Ford Transit Custom Auto. I ordered this vehicle with a number of factory fit options, one of which is the Intelligent Speed Assist option. However, although the camera and speed sign recognition software is fitted to the vehicle, it is missing the software option from the driver assist menu, consequently this feature does not work. I have spoken to the dealer who confirms this option was ordered and should have been fitted by Ford at the time of manufacture. Both the dealer and I have been trying to get Ford to explain and to advise whether or not the software on my van can be updated so the system will work as expected. 4 weeks after delivery I am no further on with this and I am finding it frustrating to say the least that I have paid for and have not got this option. Ford have just referred me back to my dealer, who in turn is saying Ford are not giving him the answers. The following is the description in the Ford Transit Custom brochure.

Traffic Sign Recognition
Designed to automatically read standard format road-speed signs and display the posted speed limit in the instrument cluster. Intelligent Speed Assist combines Traffic Sign Recognition with Adjustable Speed Limiter to identify the prevailing limit and automatically restrict the vehicles speed to the limit detected.

The above statement leaves me in no doubt how this system should work but without the software option showing in the driver assist menu it will not work on my van.

I am not sure where I stand with this now so I am hoping this forum can help me with this issue.

Regards

Roy

I don't know for sure but would expect that you'll need the front camera for imaging.

You'd need to ask the dealer specifically if you get the Adaptive cruise control feature rather than assume.

I wouldn't be at all surprised that the front radio sync system will also come without sat nav :?

It's not so much about Ford saving money but more like charging more for options.

We have an 18 facelift Sport auto. We specified a load of options but not sat nav as it we don't like manufacturers' systems and the Sync 3 system works perfectly with google maps. Anyway, the traffic sign recognition works just fine but I was surprised that it also reads the 20mph signs outside schools. Bob.

I haven't heard of intelligent speed assist, but from what you've described, if you have the front camera to identify speed limit signs, and cruise with a speed limiter, then I can't see why the two can't work together :?
Surely it's just software, and I can't see what satnav would do to combine the features, (but I'm willing to learn).

What I will say is that the front camera doesn't always see the speed limit signs, especially if they are dirty, or partially hidden in a bush, and I'm pretty sure that mine doesn't see the overhead ones on the motorway, (but I'll need to check that). Given all of that, I don't see how you could rely on it to limit your speed automatically :?

Would agree about the speed assist comment. We have adaptive cruise which slows the vehicle down, but all the sign recognition does is display the speed limit digitally on the instrument panel. Doesn't automatically bring you down to the speed limit - well ours doesn't anyway.

I've just ordered a new van and have added
Adaptive cruise control. If you want intelligent speed assist it is another option. £100.
You can't order intelligent speed assist unless you have ordered the adaptive cruise but it doesn't mention you also need sat nav?

My experience of road sign recognition in a car (admittedly it was a Nissan) was that it spends probably 40% of the time not knowing what the speed limit is. It’s about as much use as the speed limit signs that my satnav displays, and that’s got a lot to do with limits being lowered on a regular basis and the satnav map makers can’t keep up.

What does the intelligent speed assist do when it’s not sure about a limit?

Adaptive cruise is one toy that's really useful and works well. It does have a couple of annoying niggles, but nothing that can't be overcome by 'adapting' your driving style :P Cruise, with no adaptive function, is largely a waste of time on a busy road

I can't see why you would need the Intelligent Speed Assist, just set the cruise to the new limit :)

I agree. Anyway, turns out you can set your 'speed limiter' to comply with restricted speed limits. It will slow you down. However, system doesn't recognise national speed limit signs, so you can only do whatever it was, 30mph etc once you are in a 70mph zone unless you dial up the change manually! Bob.
