The last mk7 were Euro5. The same engine as in the Custom 2,2. I would presume the gearbox is the same.

Any idea what date the "last" would be from?

Thanks for that. I couldn't find anything from Ford but info on new models. This unfortunately is the later 2.0L engine, but its possible the trend was similar in the earlier 2.2L I suppose.

Strangely, I expected to find a higher ratio with the lower PS engines, but that doesn't seem to be the case with these.
I didn't even realise that they did a 340 in the Custom, thinking that they had pushed the load luggers into the Mk8 territory.
Now there's a thought, Mk8 FWD 2.2 box? Must be a few of those around in the scrappies by now

The rwd mk8 seem to be high my ex 17 seat bus has a 3:1 diff in it and I am struggling to find a ford dealership to take on a swoop to a3:7 they can get the parts but not the tools to do it local one got the parts but had to give up as none of their group had the tools even the so called transit Centres hope you have more luck with the fwd van

Can anyone tell me which box on the Custom / Mk8 vin plate the final drive ratio is in.
I can't seem to find a vin plate picture that looks like mine.
If it's a code for the ratio, can anyone list the codes?

Well the Mk7 box idea went out the window.
Just discovered that the last of the Mk7s with the 2.2L fwd uses the later ridiculous custom gearing too, so no solution there.
Come on fellas. Someone give me a clue. How do I find the gear ratios?
Has anyone got a 340 that can quote exact speed and revs?

Update on the custom ridiculous drive ratio problem.

I have had it remapped to 170 ish, which did help a lot in making it driveable, but didn't really solve the stupid drive ratio problem.
Even cruising on the motorway in the mid sixties, it would barely stand 6th gear.

Got a helpful gearbox specialist to look into any alternative final drive ratios.
There are two layshafts incorporating two final drive pinions engaging with the ring gear on the diff.
Approx price for the three pieces from ford is about £400. Hmmm, quite a lot.
Instead, he found a box from the heaviest custom (might have been RAC), and transferred the necessary bits.
The donor box also had a 4-pinion diff, so used the whole donor diff, rather than swopping just the ring gears.
End result..... Much better all round. About 12% lower gearing.
Doesn't sound a lot, but its enough to make things work now that didn't before.
6th gear now usable (the opinion of idiots that sit at 80 on the motorway doesn't count).
Better overlap through the gears for overtaking.
Now possible to roll though slow junctions in 2nd without stalling. In general, the engine objects far less to letting the revs get a bit low.
I can now reverse my trailer up a slope without burning the clutch.
Fuel consumption...slightly better.
I can thoroughly recommend this mod. Cost £650. Anyone buying a new van should enquire of the possibility of the lower final drive.

I agree completely I’ve been trying to get my rwd changed from a 3.1 to a 3.7 at a ford dealer 3 have tried 1 got all the bits to do job but had to give up as could not get the ford tools to set it up I’m not keen on taking it to a axle independent as over the years I have had gearboxes done by so-called specialist and been crap I just need to find one with a good reputation

Hi Alan is your man able to get more of these parts and possibly post them to me or even the model/part number for the box he got the bits from and I can get them fitted down here (kent) as I could really do with lowering the gearing on my van i two a have a 2ton caravan but I have also gone up in wheel/tyre size and they are AT tyres to as I'm always in and out of wet fields so if I could drop the ratios a bit it mite even just bring me back down the standard witch would help can you let me know if not was it £650 fitted? And how long was your van of the road for thanks.Russ

Hi Alan,
Sorry to revive an old thread, but I wonder if you could share the contact of your gearbox specialist who did your mod.
If you cannot share here, could you please PM.
Many thanks!
