Bouncy Ride

Postby Getawayhs2 » Wed Jan 02, 2019 11:48 am

Has anyone found a solution for the ridiculously bouncy ride? I generally don't have much weight in the back - speed humps, or any slightly uneven surface at worst launches it into the air, and at best makes me feel sick , any sharp change in direction is terrifying. Do 18" wheels really make any difference? Can you get stiffer rear shocks or would lowering it help?

What is the gross weight of your van?

i.e. 280, 290, 300, 310, 320 or 340 model.

If you've got a higher GVM, it will tend to get airbourne over bumps with no weight in the back.

Stick something heavy in the back.

Put some weight in it. You can't expect a 280 to ride properly with no weight in it, that's why they make a 260.

By "shocks" I assume you mean dampers? No of course they won't make it better, dampers and springs should compliment each other, replacing one without the other will make things worse.

Carrying needless weight is not an option and would be rather silly - just because I don't a have a lot of weight doesn't been I can spare volume. You can't have a 260 with automatic transmission so that wasn't an option either.

I don't see why I can't expect a 280 to ride properly - my 2010 Vivaro with almost the same payload was fine.

Strange, I also have a 68 reg 280 Automatic and carry little weight a lot of the time and cant say I have noticed any problems ride wise, and the roads here in Herefordshire are hardly smooth and have potholes that you lose a Citroen C1 in.
Sure, if you get a set of bumps in the right sequence and with little weight its possible to get the arse to hop a bit but that's been the case even right back to my mk4 days.
Then again, I am used to a Series One Landrover so perhaps my standard are not high

The custom rides better with weight in.

lower your tyre pressure to 40 ( or similar if you don’t have a low profiles )

Put some aftermarket rear shocks on

Thanks. I'll try tyre pressures for a start. Quite tempted with suspension kit in the other thread too./..
